Tank size and range - the answer.

Well I know this has been discussed before due to the pessimistic fuel gauge.
After filling up on sunday for the ride down to Hereford (two up) I had 200 pre miles on the clock. I used it into work on monday with the reserve light flashing which I know is good for at least 50 miles but I still only get 20 odd litres in come fill up time. So this time I fill a one litre container and strapped it on the back for the trip into work yesterday. I expected to run out on the way back but still made it home! Filled up this morning with 313 miles on the clock and the tank took 23 litres so ne question answered ie it definitely is a 23 tank! 62 mpg.

duibhceK 13-07-11 17:05

Mine seems to keep getting more fuel efficient with every additional km. I'm close to 30000km now and this week recorded my highest mileage on a tank thus far. I was 2km shy of hitting the 400 mark when she hit reserve.
She's now at 35km of reserve, but I don' t think I'll be letting her run dry to see how far she will go on the full tank.

Assuming that reserve is the advertised 6l and the tank is indeed 23l that brings the economy to about 4.25l/100km.

stuxtttr 14-07-11 12:26

I was at 298 Miles when I passed a garage

got 21 litres in the tank so I think 350 Miles could be acheived with a few mods ie free flowing zorst, topbox and a limp wrist lol

I meant to do this at some point as I tend to fill up @ 200miles and each time think why didn't I bring my jerry can?

Good to know.

roswellj 16-07-11 16:48

6 litre reserve sounds about right. I normally chuck some more fuel in when it hits the reserve light and I get about 16 litres in when it has only just hit reserve. Don't know how many km's i get out of a tank though... im always too eager to jump back on to remember to reset the trip meter.

dallas 16-07-11 19:47

I always ride on the tripmeter, never mind the fuel gauge. When I ride backroads, it runs 1lt:25/26km(doin' 80/90kmh), so 500+km's range is possible... When I ride highways it runs 1lt: 20/21km's, so understandable less range, but still good enuff! But all fact&figures aside, I usually gas up around 460km's, that'll do for me just fine...
Oh, and whenever it's available I'll run 98oct gas(in Holland not everywhere, but in Belgium lotsa), runs smoother imho.
Greetz, Hans.

redbikejohn 16-07-11 19:56

the good stuff is just too expensive in the uk so it counteracts the fuel saving over the car - bloody taxman!

stuxtttr 04-08-11 22:23

i guess the only way around the high costs is use somewhere like tesco and use 3 times 5p off vouchers when you fill up

Niek 08-08-11 15:58

My max. fill up was 24.5L. It was sputtering for about 5km and kept it running by shaking the bike violently to get the fuel to the pump.

redbikejohn 08-08-11 16:54

! Wow. Have you drilled the filler tube? Mine was still running fine when I got 23 ltrs in but I filler up as I had to use the M40 and did not want to have it die in the fast lane in busy traffic.

Filled the girl up north of london, went to Brighton, Hove, Portsmouth, Poole, Exeter and filled her up again at Bodmin in Cornwall after 328 miles, took 19.6 liters. Good or what?
Had similar in the North, 260 miles done and filled her up with 12.9 liters. Thank god for that as they were charging 1.67/ltr.

Have you got peddles fitted or a sail? !!!!!!!

I think you've made some mistake. Or your clocks are set to km. 328 miles/19.6ltr is 76mpg, which would surprise me but I wouldn't call impossible. However 260 miles/12.9ltr is 92mpg, and I flat out don't believe that.

Pure fiction... 22.9 litres for 260 miles would be more like it, certainly for my bike.

redbikejohn 13-08-11 11:13

252 miles and filled up with 18.5 litres on Friday morning. Was taking is easy in and out of work.

muppdog 13-08-11 12:57

Guys,

my clocks are ok and i never said i was going flat out. All i know is that i got well over 300 miles out of a tank full of petrol and still had some spare. Surprised me as well. Thought i was running on fumes. But so close to home i thought sod it.
And along those single track roads up north you hardly ever get over 50. Try it and you might just be suprised what the bike can do. When travelling, why the hurry?
More dissappointing was the wear of the Siracs. Rear to shot and front not far of. Under 5K.

Mine too. Whenever I bother working out my mpg I also calculate the theoretical range for 23l, it's pretty much always round the 260-270 mile mark, regardless of the sort of roads I've been riding.

redbikejohn 15-08-11 13:36

Away on a little trip at the moment, two up and loaded up, full panniers and dry bag. Surprisingly the mpg hasn't been effected too much. Still managed to get over 200 miles before reserve started to flash.

tripletom 16-08-11 18:54

All these people with 60+mpg, you are aware that after you have run the bike in you can open the throttle more? ;)
I hit my best of 52mpg the other week, now it's back to the normal 47.

redbikejohn 16-08-11 19:17

well mine dropped to a low of 52 to 56, but once i'd sorted the cat out and fuel mod etc it went up to 60 and has remained there dispite the way i ride. 80 mph to work and back etc. if a take it easy it goes to 62 mpg.

just filled up on our mini trip. 55 mpg two up and fully loaded.

fac191 16-08-11 23:31

Mpg

I get 50mpg when riding short trips to work. I havent been able to do a long trip since i put the DNA filters fuel mod and pipe on. Should be going away next week so hopefully will get a good return .

Useful to know...

Best I have seen is 72.5mpg but I have rarely dropped below 65mpg except riding two-up on the motorway. Even then I got 58mpg over 245 miles, half of them m/way at - er - pressing on speed.

I have managed to eke over 90 miles out of the reserve ie. once the indicator bar starts flashing. Still had 1.5l left.

jimmysimpson 18-08-11 23:05

I get 240 miles to flashing thingy. What does that equate to?

about 340 miles before the bike splutters to a hault

i can sometimes get the flashing thingy, flashing at 140 miles woops

redbikejohn 18-08-11 23:36

Depends how many litres it takes to fill up again. If its about 18 it works out to 60.
If you have a smart phone there is an app that you can download to work it out and store the info.

fac191 19-08-11 01:03

What formula are people using to work out these mpg`s ?

redbikejohn 19-08-11 05:51

I use the app on my phone.

1) Fill up your bike and reset one of the trip counters.

2) Ride until you think you need fuel again

3) Fill up your bike again.

4) Make a note of the mileage on the trip counter.

5) Make a note of how many litres of fuel you put in the second time.

6) Divide (5) by 4.55 to work out how many gallons of fuel you put in.

7) Divide (4) by (6) to work out your miles/gallon figure.

The important/tricky bit is filling the tank up to the same level both times. Pick petrol stations with level forecourts, fill up with the bike upright, and stop when the level reaches the bottom of the inlet neck and that's about as good as you can do.

I've drilled the inlet piece to allow the air out for that last litre or so - works a treat, but you do need to ride it and not leave it for the fuel to pi55 out of the overflow!

Exactly what I did! And I made a excel file to hold all the data. I don't need a fancy app to do basic unit conversions :glasses1: This is the result.

I bought my Tenere in April /May 2011. I wrote down the mileage every fill-up. As you can see I have an average of 4.28 liter /100km or about 55mpg. I have an extra column in the excel sheet that shows the fuel consumption between every fill-up. But this varies a bit as there's no guarantee that you fill it up to the same level every single time. But over a longer period, the average should be ok.

Might give you guys an idea :)

Metzy 22-01-12 11:17

Here my fuel economy spreadsheet. Mine starts flashing around 250km every time. My riding is mainly at about 118km/h on the speedo (actual 108km/h on my GPS) to and from work approx 20km one way. The temperature is pretty hot in my neck of the woods 25 degrees C at 5:30am and approx 30 degrees C at 6:45pm, that's going to work then home.

enduro374 23-01-12 15:21

All sounds about right,

I can get as little as 200 miles on a tank if I'm loaded up and in a hurry and as much as 300 if I'm taking it easy on a run..
