"Help! Save me from the angle grinder!"

This a plea from my Tenere... if someone doesn't buy it quick sharp: http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=16342 then the arse-end gets it!

Yes, if noone is prepared to take this awesome example off my hands, then I will be forced to cut the rear frame off, and fit a new lower and lightweight rear fender:

Now I know you will all be interested to see what exactly I have in mind... but I also have a rally bike that needs rebuilding, a spare WR that needs assembling, a TLR200 than needs restoring and an XR400 that needs new head bearings and brake seals...

DON'T GIVE ME ANOTHER PROJECT PLEASE!!!

Cutting an inch or so out of the current subframe, slugging and then rewelding so the subframe is dropped?
That bodywork in the background going spare? ;)

Not a 690!!!

Ha! It's even more drastic than that!

The plan is to remove the whole subframe just after the point the top frame tubes meet the lower tubes, particularly as the angle of the lower tubes is the perfect angle and spacing for the one-piece fender/side panels (can you guess what it's from yet*?!) - saving a huge hunk of weight, plus lowering the whole rear end about 4-5 inches - making it much easier to get on and off!

Then create a new brace across the frame behind the airbox, with the requisite tabs on the frame for mounting the fender...

Finally, modify a stock seat-base to have a tapered seat that fits over the aperture in the fender (*where the fuel filler would go - yes, you guessed it x)

ps. Background bodywork definitely NOT going spare! However, I may be flogging off a few other 'Dakar' souvenirs to help finance 2012... x

Hee hee - don't worry, it will happen - only it's likely to be after the Lakes meet now...

On a related topic... before I get it chopped, I've been chatting to my friend John at Rally-Raid Products who does a very nice line in auxiliary tanks and rally fairings for the KTM690...

Anyway, we've been talking for a while now about doing something similar for the Tenere - particularly for those who have fitted (or are planning on fitting) a single exhaust like the MTC set-up for example...

With all that space under the tail where the OEM exhaust used to sit, plus down the right hand side, there would be plenty of room for a good 8L rear tank and/or tool stowage compartment etc. which would be ideal for either overland/travel or even rally riding?

So I am holding off my chop until the measurements have been taken, for those who don't want such radical surgery!

We are also looking at the feasibility of a one-piece upper front fairing and proper aluminium Nav tower assembly (that will incorporate the OEM instrument panel of course), and the option for HID lights etc.

Hopefully we'll have some measurements taken in early May, then I can get on with the chop!

Toot toot!

Someone at the Dutch AllRoadManiacs forum developed and produces a 'universal rally tophalf' that can be customized to fit any bike.

Hmm, now I've never felt the need for extra fuel, but.......:grommit:

I would love a extra tank, 15 L is not much... Would also be looking at a rallyfaring, depening of the price. Maybe also a low fender??
