Bent front rim
Noticed a couple of days ago that my Ten had a wobble on the road which was most noticeable between 30 and 50 kph. Checked the front wheel by spinning it, and its aver so slightly out of true. There is no apparent dent or ding in it, its just out of true by about 5 mmm. You can see this by lifting the front wheel off the ground and spinning it. I had been doing some off-roading, but it wasn't that heavy. I took it in to a dealer and he says it needs a new one. I always thought you could true a wheel if it wasnt dinged, is the dealer having me on? Any suggestions welcome cos I don't want to buy a new rim....

Yes you can true it and dont need a new wheel if the rim or hub isnt damaged. Any half decent wheel builder will be able to do the job or try it yourself its not difficult. It maybe purely one single spoke which just needs tightening.
Tap all the spokes and you can hear the loose one |
There is a section in the service manual about truing wheels and spoke adjustment, I saw it today whilst trying to find something else! That was the XTX manual though...

The original rims are ****. If you're gonna get new ones, get Excel rims instead. Here:

I should have gone for these before starting this trip. Jami |

Excel Rims and Talon Hubs
Following much consultation on the subject I was hoping for some input on the specifics of mounting new rims and hubs on the Ten. The off the road stuff obviously comes complete, but at a cost! 1600.00 for two wheels seems a mite steep to me, that's nearly half what I paid for the bike... But it's worth discussing (and I hope that those of you with some experience with this will help me out here).
Fitting the Off the road kit looks relatively simple, I have checked out the website and although it's in German, it seems that the front wheel is the one that needs the most modifications. It seems from the site that it has only one brake disc. Is this correct? Does it use the same diameter roter as the OEM discs? Can the OEM Brembo caliper be used still? Do you then just blank off one of the hydraulic lines for the front brake? Will one disc provide enough stopping power for the Ten? Brakes aren't that great at the moment, cutting it to one rotor seems a little dangerous :P I suppose you could also just get the rims and spokes and have a wheel builder make these up for me. If this is the case the costs are halved, which begs the obvious question, what are the hubs like apart from the cush drive rubber issue (not such a problem now I've discovered the Kev mod). Will the hubs be ok on excel rims and a good set of spokes? Thanks in advance! Bear in mind the wheel is only as strong as the build. I changed the spokes on mine for ssteel and increased the rear spoke size to increase strength. The wheels are stronger and true.
Same thing applied when building montain bike wheels a few yrs ago for serious off road abuse. There still as true today and the spokes still spot on. |

Oh by the way, if you go to Off-The-Road's home page, you can change the language into English. Jami |
