Oil in the airbox
Checked the air filter today and noticed a little oil in the bottom of the airbox, not a lot but more than just specks. This normal? I do spend some time with the bike on it's side periodically when enthusiasm exceeds ability greenlaning so wondered if this could be the cause ??

Ive noticed this myself. It drains away to a tube that sticks out the base of the bike. Ive unplugged it and drained it off but some more back again. Someone said to me that it was due to riding in damp conditions.

I'll keep an eye just in case, can't seem to find any rational explanations

"they all do that, sir"
but it is worse on the '08 models and can be improved by replacing the air box breather with the '09 model. Do a search for it on the forum. but mine still does it a bit on occasion, especially after longer motorway rides. |

oil in airbox pipe
i ride my 2011 ten to work and back every day, about 100 miles, i get oil in my airbox pipe too? is this a fault with the bike, or is it normal?

I'd go along with the motorway and damp mileage being the cause 10,000 miles and nothing in the airbox pipe, then 2,600 mile trip with over half covered in pouring rain and around 500 miles of motorways and there was about 10mm in the bottom of the tube. Emptied out and back into the old pattern of 100+ mile a-road blasts and it's all back to normal.

Hi
Indeed this has been covered before and was especially more of an issue on 2008 models and most of the 2008 bikes had the modified 2009 breather expansion box as did I and the change corrected the problem for the 2008 year bikes. If you get a little oil then don't worry too much as I use to get a full outlet tube of oil after about 4-500 miles. Its caused by high speed riding over a few miles. if you want to get the history see my original post on the subject here http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=8394 I hope that helps your queries for what is not now really a major problem. |
