Buying a 660 tenere

Hi Everyone

Im about to buy a 660 tenere when i find one at the right price, it will be a 08 to 09. Is there anything i need to look out for apart from the usual chain sprocket etc?

Thanks

Have a look at the condition of the internals of the Regulator plug. Its a simple job pulling it off to have a peek inside although a vendor might not like the idea. if you are buying from a dealer there should be no problem.

Some have suffered problems with water ingress and then corroded away inside.

Thanks for your reply, where do i find the Regulator plug on the bike?

Just where the front wheel sprays water, its a regulator/rectifier behind a steel plate with 2 bolt heads visible. Look under the horn and above the plastic bashplate RHS as sitting on the bike.

Some from the period you are looking at were not properly sealed and the damage can lead to a whole new loom being needed.

It is a minority, not all bikes are affected

I've fitted an Extenda Fenda now to prevent the spray.

The cush drive rubbers will be shot - it's normal. Just pad out with an old inner tube when you get her home..

Otherwise a general look around and look for othe obvious signs of abuse, but these Ten's seem not to self destruct in my experience..

Happy Hunting..

If it's an 08 with the Yam crash bars and ally bash plate then check the front crash bar mounting near the frame oil bung for cracks, and the rear bash plate mountings for cracks. There's nothing you can do it about it warranty wise now, but better to know. The crash bars are quite easy to weld back up.

To get access to the reg/rect plug you may well need to remove the horn, and the reg/rect. If someone came to look at my bike and wanted to start taking it apart I would tell them to trot on. It's not a big thing to do once you've bought the bike.
Incidentally not all Ten's have had issues with the plug, in fact it's been quite few, across both 08 and 09.

As mentioned cush drive rubbers are dire and will fall apart. Check OE chain as it's not the best (pull back off rear sprocket, and try and twist lower run). If the bike has around 10k on the clock then check the rear shock for excessive sag.
