Yamaha XT660Z Tenere opinions
Not been on here for a long while; but finally about to bite the bullet and buy a Ten. Just wanted a few opinions first. This bike has been with us since 2008 now. What are peoples long term opinions on the Tenere? What are its strong and weak points as a long distance/RTW tourer? What do you like / dislike about it? What have / would you change? How does it compare to similarly targeted bikes (KTM, BMW etc.?). How reliable is it? Also posted on Advrider.com
Cheers all. |

The best thing is to look through the post that are there already and you'll get a better understanding of the srong points and weak points of the this bike. |
As Gulgo has intimated there are a lot of varied views on the Ten so its probably fair to say its not perfect but at the price point it sits at its doing pretty damn good.
The Up/down sides in my view (as an ex ten owner - now S10) suspension is cheap , underdamped and undersprung but does a good job at the same time ie I had no compliants about mine hooning on tarmac and it was only offroad that the stock units forced the pace to remain low, that in itself is probably a good thing for todays (UK) green lanes and the threat that they face from Nimbies etc. Engine, its a unremarkable single that is neither powerful or slow and isnt super smooth nor does it vibrate badly. Some possibility for gearbox issues (mine had poor retention on 2nd gear) but could be rare. body cheapish unpainted plastics but looks the part for a rugged adventure bike footpegs - ****e swap em!. oem Luggage , good if you dont expect them to act as tank armour/crash bars. High speed, fast enough for uk m'way work but can be buffety (I notice this more now I have the S10 as it doesnt tire me as the Ten did). Overall quality, not up to KTM stds but not bad and its not KTM prices either. All just MO . Great bike for what it costs though and I think without many competitors , maybe the tiger XC800 is the nearest. |
i think its important to look at the ten with a off road point of view
ive run 1150gs and two 1200s and no way would i swap back .. its a soft bike ..what i mean is its suspension and engine are set soft ..this for me equates to a really good trail bike hard charging is not on my radar on the ten and i find it well mannered and easy going off road on the road i think it handles real well for a trail bike the screen needs replacing for motorway work ..givi and mra wing is my solution a airhawk slung on the saddle makes it very comfy indeed for me i found the gearing to tall ..annoying getting caught between gears on the road and too much clutch slipping off i went for 14 /46 and i love the compramise .. tickover in 2nd and more zip ...... one gear higher at 40 and 50 just stick to a sat nav 70 on the motorways the other thing i addressed was the height ..i lowered it 1in at the back and dropped the forks so i could manage better off road ..im 6ft 1 tall i its a bike that requires a certain minset ..im not bothered about the lack of power ..ive run some very quick bikes in the past i actually passed over a multistrada and a few others to buy the660 ten ..the ten was more fun ..and more practical ..and most importantly more managable off road for me ..i rarely feel underbiked running with gses and ktms ..until of course you hit the motorway .. than im happy with mp3 playing behind me screen at a staedy 75 if your used to thumpers and maby vees i think you will like it straight away if you come from fours it may seem a tad agricultural a good test ride is where its at ..ignore the screen seat gearing and any height issues you think it may have as they a re simple fixes i love riding mine ..its a keeper no question good luck http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/4741/snowone.jpg By null at 2011-02-20 |

Many Thanks, TL |
ive had it for years ..its really good
i got the largest one ..its like a pear shape ..transforms the ten instantly into a long distance perch ..highly recomended i got it here its the big cruiser one feck me theyve gone up a bit ..i paid about110 qid for it ..but i have to say i dont regret it its been on severel different bikes since on a positive note it got a puncture a couple of years ago and they reaired it for me and sent the repair out fit for postage only ..its been fine since http://www.bykebitz.co.uk/acatalog/LARGE_CRUISER.html http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/4697/img1644l.jpg By null at 2011-01-17 |

More of an investment for the long distance rider, considering the price.. |
A bit steep

yes i can see why you would think that way ..given the price but apart from being able to keep it .it has other advantages
the first one is its guarrenteed to work after fitting i think the biggest problem with the ten is the seat is too narrow and that is hard to deal with by remodelling .. and keeping it good for standing too ..if you went wider it would effect the leg height too with the hawk if you shift a leg down the pockets drain the little bit of air out and is doesnt effect the height the seat itself is ok but its not as wide as road bikes and that i reakon is the main problem over long distance ..they look a bit rum but you can pump and release air to make it just right for you another positive is that air circulates between the pods ..the seat pods that is .. maby your pods too its quite cool compared to vynal the air hawk just spreads out when my fat ass is on it ..takes away the hard edges and still keeps the seat narrow .. . the idea with them is to have as little air as poss in them .. hardly any at all .. you blow it up and then sit on the seat ..and release tha valve until the pad moulds to you and the seat ..close the valve you would be very surprised on how little air is in the pad ..when its inflted it looks deflated .. then the air moves from cell to cell as your butt moves about ive got twenty days to do in april and may and im so glad i have the airhawk here it is in a former life http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/8803/p1010011tds.jpg By [url=http://profile.imageshack.us this is all the air you need http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/5761/p1010012zo.jpg By null at 2010-09-08 i doubt a gel pad would cure the width problem .. |
If you need any more convincing...

So kewl I want it now!
Hi Jenny, you know I want it. It's so pretty and those WP forks are yummy. Can't have another bike though, garage is full already. Also it won't pass roadworthy in Spain as the excel rims don't have homolagation certification. Not sure if the forks have CE certification either. Not that I've even considered buying it... Much.
Seriously the annual inspection in Spain is hardcore, they failed my landy last time 'cos although both the Landy and the new tow bar had homolagation (EU conformity certificate), the tow bar hadn't been installed by a Spanish qualified mechanic. Very difficult to sort out. |
Hee hee - not you you ninny, I meant Wuming - the OP... I'll even deliver it for free to London!

For me, as a touring bike its best not to go via the autobahns of Europe, its only a single and it really is suited to the side and minor roads. The weight of the MetalMule panniers and top-box do make a difference in power to weight ratio, as a bike with no added extras, spinning around the minor roads is a REAL breeze. Get a taller screen, I think the standard screen is too short and fitting a taller screen will, and does, make for a much better ride. The downside I will say against this bike is that the rear wheel cush-drives dont seen to last all that long, I found I was replacing mine around the six to eight thousand mile mark, to be fair Id also done a around Europe trip fully loaded on the first cush-drives. The suspension is, again, I think, wonderful and I find that Im never really suffering with numb-bum at all, there are more ups than downs with this bike |

The bike still has the same luggage capacity, and with the instrument panel now reinstalled in the original position (and the rally nav gear removed), it is very much like the stock bike to ride, except it feels Sooooooo much better in every respect... there is a much stronger cush-drive ( a weak point on the stock wheels) and with an 18" rear, far more tyre choice too. not that I'm trying to convince you or anything x Serious offers considered etc. Jx |

I ordered myself same, but I wonder if the key will be available :-) How are you satisfied with it? http://www.givi.it/soft-luggages/Tan.../T480-TANKLOCK |

the bag sits on the tank ring and clears the key ..my solution was pretty simple but effective i found the optional map holder very very good too ...so far hand on heart i cant fault it ..ove even done some pretty heavy trail riding with it on ...very handy indeed for your maps ans biccies first aid kit ect i hope this helps http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/6945/img1460fz.jpg By minkyhead at 2010-11-28 http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/1967/keyclose.jpg By minkyhead at 2010-11-28 http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/1823/snow2t.jpg By minkyhead at 2011-02-20 |
