Need replacement tool kit
My XT660Z toolkit was stolen on my last trip, so I need to get some replacements. The local dealer has the standard Yamaha tool kit in stock but seeing as I don't use much of the bits and he wanted over �60 for it (!) I thought I would be a cheapskate and get what I need elsewhere.
The main thing is a spark plug wrench which the dealer doesn't sell by itself. Even with the OE wrench the plug is difficult to reach and turn, and I thought THIS ONE might be more suitable. But is it the right size? I can't remember much of what else was in the kit. A 10mm (?) hex for adjusting the front forks, a couple of spanners for the chain, a screwdriver... What else was there? One way to prevent this happening again (assuming it was in a tube?) is to actually have the toolkit in the bike. I have the answer to the spark plug wrench, it is 16mm or 5/8".
Still don't know what's in the standard tool kit. :( |

There is a thread on here called Tools (which I think Molgan started), plus also my packing light thread with the contents of my trail tool kit... But off the top of my head, I'd buy a Leatherman Kick (good blade and screwdrivers, but none of the other crap). 14mm Hex for the front axle. 22mm ring spanner (or socket) for the rear axle. 8/10/12/13/14/17 sockets should do everything on the bike (engine bolts the lot), plus a T-handle (folding if you want to fit it in the original toolkit space). You'll probably need a 3/8th drive for the 17 and 22mm sockets, but personally I like a 1/4 inch for the 8/10/12/13/14mm sockets... a 10/12mm combi spanner - two if you must (for adjusting the chain), but I find one is sufficient if you've put copper-slip on the threads... 4/5/6mm allen keys. Erm, that's it I think... That little lot should still fit in the space in the tank the OEM kit went in. Jx ps. You've got the plug spanner size - it's the same as a Honda XR650R as I recall too x |
I bought a cracker of a little 3/8th drive socket set for �30 that does all that and more.

However, I think as a 'replacement' or indeed 'upgrade' for the OEM kit, a decent ratchet, plus the bike specific tools (14mm hex/22mm socket) which aren't even included in the OEM are worth considering too for anyone planning a longer trip. Jx ps. leg is healing, slower than I'd like, but at least there is no pain... I'm hoping to be walking/driving again in a couple of weeks, and be at the Ace Cafe Overland Adventure Day on the 20th Feb - hopefully having picked up my Dakar bike from Patsy and be on my way home! |
