Cheap Unreg '08 Tenere

There's an 'new' '08 Tenere in my local dealers and they want 5,199 for it. They've offered me 4 grand to part-ex my scruffy, well used GS1200 with nearly 60k on the clock so all it'll cost me in readies is 1100 quid.
Does this bike and offer sound at all attractive?
Was the '08 model any good?
Is there anything I should know about it?
The only other alternative is to sell the bike private for 4k and find a newer used low mileage model with a few extras on it for 4.5 to 5k-ish.
These are the reasons I joined this site so please be honest.

hi and Welcome...I am sure a Ten owner will help you out shortly...I have an XTR so haven't a clue!

That's not a bad price - in fact it's a very good price for a brand new bike when the 2010 bike, which isn't significantly different, is well over a grand more. You should get them to change the oil breather catch tank under warranty, because that changed on the 2009 bikes. You might want to either get them to check, or check yourself that the plug connecting the reg/rec is connected properly. Search on here for either of those items to find out the background if you want. Either way you'll still have 2 years warranty from when it's registered.

You might be able to do better with a low-mileage s/h bike if the extras are important to you. I bought a 2,800 mile bike with full luggage, bashplate, engine bars, Akra system, and a few other bits for 5k a year ago (which now has 17,500 miles on it and is probably worth about 50p :D), but that was a very good deal, and with the new price going up I don't know how used prices have changed in the mean time.

Not a terrible price, could be cheaper though. What colour is it?
As UT says, get them to change the crankcase breather to the 09 version, and check the reg/rect connector is seated properly.
Aside from that there are ****** all differences that matter.

someones made/making a killing on that bike at 5200. When that bike was new, 2 years ago, it was nowhere near that amount. I'd say look around, George White were selling 2008 models for under 5k not that long ago.

Graham Barber 26-01-11 11:25

It's black and are they obliged to do the mods for free?

I was in George Whites recently and they said they had '08 bikes going out at 4,895 so there were bargains out there.

The only other fly in the ointment is due to jacking my job in and selling my house I plan to spend 6 months or possibly permanently move to New Zealand.

I have looked at how much Tenere's sell for over there so it might be worth shipping this one over there.

Too much time and money on my hands me thinks!!!!:icon_eek:

Think you should haggle a bit - paid 5300 for an 09 with a centre stand added - perhaps go back with a cheque for 5k.

A7 UFO 26-01-11 15:03

I'd be pleased if I'd paid 5k for the bike.

Peatbog 26-01-11 15:05

When I bought mine in 08, I paid 5k.
When stock sits around in a shop for two years, doesn't the price normally go down?

Pete.

Graham Barber 26-01-11 15:13

All excellent points and advice which I've hoisted onboard, keep 'em coming, it's very much appreciated thanks.

You've all probably just saved me a few quid should I go for the '08.

tripletom 26-01-11 16:03

Bear in mind the Yamaha OTR price in 2008 was 4899, they've obviously had the stock sitting there, and are trying to get a quick sale by pricing it cheaper than the ricockulous price it currently is.
Regarding the crankcase breather change, I don't know of one that wasn't done under warranty, so there shouldn't be a cost there.

enduro374 28-01-11 17:21

Anything around 5k sounds good to me.

Yes, be sure to get the updates done by the dealer.

maxwell123455 28-01-11 19:04

Going to take a different look at this ie the BMW price. 4k for a 60k mile BMW, I know they are expensive, VAT is going up etc etc but i think although you may not be getting a full out cracker deal on a new Yamaha, the BMW i think would take a fair while to sell for that on a private market. So really in a round about way i dont think your getting such a bad deal.

Graham Barber 31-01-11 16:53

I've listened to all your very good advice and have contacted the dealer to see if thier offer still stands.
If it does there will be a new, happy Tenere owner on this fine site very soon!!

richardsracingmad 31-01-11 17:02

Sounds a fair deal to me........I bet you will be posting the outcome in a postive manner soon!!

Graham Barber 31-01-11 20:29

Hesitation on my part decided the outcome of this one I'm afraid.
The dealer's had a cash offer on the bike so isn't interested in a part-ex so it's back to finding a sympathetic buyer for the GS.
I do have someone interested but they can't stump up the money just yet so I guess I'll wait for that to happen.
There's plenty of good, run in, used ones with a few extras on them around so "all good things come to those who wait" as they say.

richardsracingmad 31-01-11 21:21

Speaking as a dealer (cars).....wait for the next bus,,,,,,,! They do arrive! Just be patient, and you will know the market better for it, so when the right bike comes along, at the right deal for you, do it!

You'd think, but not when the RRP of a new one is over 1500 more... x

The 2008 retail price of the bike was 4899, and if the dealer has had it in stock since then, then he is making a fair margin on it. If he bought it in in 2009 as 'old stock' for Yamaha after the price went up, he doesn't have much room to move as they were 5299 by then...

To be honest, if I was the dealer, and had sat on 5K worth of credit for nearly 30 months, I'd want to be making a few hundred extra quid on it too... but as others have said, a brand new Tenere for anything close to 5K these days is a steal, so go for it!

btw. I bought a brand new '08 in the summer of '08 and well, I'll let you search out the threads... suffice to say it has been excellent for over 33,000 miles now - across the USA (twice) and from Paris to Dakar...

Jx

ps. just read on and see you've missed out on that particular bike, but still, if you can find a new one for around 5K, it's a great bike for the money... and as others have said, there is no discernible difference in model years...

Tim Cullis 01-02-11 23:40

I get the impression some of these 08 bikes haven't been in the dealers all that time. Maybe they are part of a central inventory that's been dribbled out. Anyway my friend bought a new bike for 4900 a few months back.
