Water Temperature Gauge for XTR

Hi

Just wondering has anyone fitted a water temperature gauge to their XTX/XTR

richardsracingmad 20-12-10 21:00

good idea...I'm also starting thinking about it for when my engine upgrade happens!

(parts still in Customs)...

I'm considering buying one of these as a little Christmas treat for the Z...

I'm not particularly concerned about overheating, but it's always nice to know what the engine's doing.

They look great.

I had my own made up one on my 04 XTX, it worked well. The coolant temp runs around 85C most of the time while riding, the fans come on at 105C & cuts out at 98C.

The sensor was fitted inline on the hose between the throttle body & cylinder head.

Nice find - I have ordered the one with the inline water take off. Unfortunately I may have to dispense with Kevs very attractive water cooler unit though

I'm debating which is the best place to fit it - top hose or bottom? The top hose is easier to get to and has a nice straight section to cut on the Z, it will also have the hottest water travelling through it (before the rad), it'll be more influenced by the thermostat opening/closing though.

Let us know how you get on with it...

logically, you would say the bottom, as that is "the result" of the cooling before it goes back into the engine again....

Fit it on the hose between the thermostat & top radiator hose, that will give a more accurate engine water temperature reading. Measuring it after the radiator will only show the temp of the water entering the motor not the motors actual water temp.

I always thought the top hose was best (as you'd want to know what temp the hottest water is), but this chap on You Tube in his tutorial on fitting the said meter (WR450) goes for the bottom hose, which made me doubt my decision...

Still, he may have got the wrong hose, but it's quite handy to see it all go together in the flesh (and the tacho too, which might be handy for R/X owners wanting a rev counter).

Kev 23-12-10 01:14

You right, top hose on the XT.

xtrlee 23-12-10 21:48

I would have thought top hose or thermostat housing as that is where they have them on auto engines.

I already have tachometer, gear indicator with voltmeter, and oil temperature gauge installed along with oil cooler and Kevs water cooler.

Even though I am not expecting trouble, I like to know that all the vital signs are ok.

Now here is a good idea, no wires fitted. I would chech the hose sizes before buying one.

Or the smaller one.

Nice and simple...a good find Kev.

xtrlee 30-12-10 09:46

Nice options alright - shipping charge reasonable too (by US standards)

xtrlee 10-01-11 14:44

Job done in a few minutes once the tank is off. Fits easily into the top hose to the rad. http://www.xt660.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

The display has some black lcd 'splodges' on it so am awaiting a replacement from Trail Tech

xtrlee 10-01-11 14:45

hose diameter is 19mm

richardsracingmad 23-02-11 10:42

I am getting one of these, a HEBO RPM/Temp Meter, which also has an over-rev warning light, engine hours, and max rpm recall.

The Trail Tech stuff doesn't sound very reliable............and these have been recommended.

Here is a short video of its features...

richardsracingmad 01-03-11 11:25

I did have a little trouble fitting the Hebo....as I didn't realise it ran from a digital watch battery in the back!!!!!! loool!!!!

But once I had figured that out, it is a doddle to fit and it works a treat.!!:smilies0349:..very good product. I just hope it is waterproof, it looks pretty waterproof.

Oil, Water, Air Temperature Gauge

Let me relive the thread by asking if there is any update (I mean up-to-date part, gauge), since some of the links exposed are dead pages.

I'm looking for some stuff to monitor oil, water and, besides, even the air.

I've seen the OTR oil temperature gauge and the Trailtech devices (not specific for the XT, though) ...

Any suggestion or recommendation?

D.

Did you use Tail Tech or was yours a home brew job? If it was home made how did you do it?
