XTR Rack

8 Attachment(s)
Gerhard Beukes asked me if I could do a rack for him for his 660R and co-incidently while I was giving it some thought, the same week, my best mate who has a 660R, had a mishap after a visit to the hardware store to buy 5 litres of ceiling paint. Well, he strapped the paint to the back of his seat (no rack) and headed home. Yes you guessed, he hit a bump, the lid popped off and he and his bike was covered in white paint. We had a good laugh but I promised to make him a rack.

Finally its done, and it has some sexy curves. Still to be anodised though.

Gerhard, this is yours my friend, just in time for Christmas.

richardsracingmad 10-12-10 22:47

that is a beautiful rack there. Looks very sturdy too. Are you going to produce any others?

XT660R Rack

I've made four, two have been sold and I won't make anymore until after Jan 15th next year, everyone shuts down for Christmas here on the 15th Dec,and I would also like to see how well they work before I make more.

It is very sturdy, 6mm marine grade ali and quite a good size, roughly 300mm x300mm rack surface.
I will post some pics once it's anodised and mounted around the end of next week.
Hopefully Gerhard will post some before and after pics of his bike.

You have some pretty cool mods on your bike :-)

Hi GStry, as i said before, i cannot wait to have it as a From Gerhard -To Gerhard Xmas gift. Will post photos of course, let me get it and fit it first.

Can i say it should fit perfectly for the XTX's out there as well, i had many adventures on my XTX before i was converted to a RRRRR, and a rack on the back really is a must.
This is a much better alternative to any of those expensive racks from Yamaha and one or 2 other manufacturers- most of those racks looks like it has anorexia anyway and i still have to see it withstand long trips loaded with more than just a sleeping bag. Searching the web for XT racks does not bring up allot op solutions, and this is the best i have seen so far.
Geoff , you will be moving few of these soon...less flying and more manufacturing coming up for you in 2011.

Hey, what is it with you guys there in KZN and the paint....just in last week there was newspaper report of 3 people in car with big drums of paint on the back seat. They had accident in Pinetown and all 3 was covered in paint, the little Fiat Palio was also completely covered in white coat in the inside...deleted the photos already from my pc, but it was very funny seeing very white people on the street corners...will look for photo or 2 on News24.

Ha ha, yes I saw that, the paramedics were laughing so hard they couldn't get out of the ambulance.

Gerhard Beukes 11-12-10 23:18

Gerhard...congratulations on your Christmas present !!

I think that if they are priced well, they will sell well. Being 6mm thick is a great bonus, some others are 4mm or 5mm.

Looking forward to seeing it fitted on the bike!

These are similar racks for the Z.., made by one of our British members.... http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=10117

Relative size comparison of my two new racks for the 660 R and Z.
Being much bigger and judging from the interest, it seems this is what's needed.
Will post pics after anodising.

GStry 15-12-10 20:54

Thanks again, yes I'm very happy the way it turned out after 50 trips to the otherside of town and all the attemps at getting it all lined up for the bolts etc.
It's also very sturdy. I was a little worried that the flat side support plates would flex but its rock solid. I put all my weight on it and it didn't move at all.

digahole78 17-12-10 12:11

Thats a really great job. The black looks great too. Is the black anodised or painted?

GStry 17-12-10 16:08

Thanks very much :001:
In these photo's they were anodised and they turned out beautifully except for the four pilot holes I had lazer cut in the rack for precise positioning for the struts. Unfortunately the guide holes which were welded and sanded to 1200 grit, still showed up in the anodising which spoilt the finish, so I have had them powder coated and they have turned out very well.
In future I will etch the position for the struts underneath for the welding.

Finally got my xmas pressie fitted to my XTR- and it will fit XTX the same way as well of course- so all those X riders out there who is looking for proper packing space for your kit, here you go.
Fitting it takes about 30 minutes and it is as strong and solid as a WW2 German tank.
It is made out of high grade 6mm aluminium with thick powder coating for extra protection. Design is perfect, strong and durable and the idea of using the top handgrip bolts as well as the exhaust mount as mounting points is cleverly thought after. You can actually lift the bike up from the back using the rack without worrying that it is going to bend or break- very useful when your mates have to help push you up that slippery and muddy hill after a river crossing.
Fitted my Oxford backpack on it , and there is still plenty of space all round to fit more goods and enough place to hook your straps in place.
The XT660R cutout on the rear just rounds this off and makes it something that looks professionally done- make sure you tell GStry you have a XTX if you order this one for your XTX.

Now if you go on net and search for XT rear racks you will not get alot, and none of the options is practical (especially those who had stickers on them saying MAX LOAD 5kg- WTF, who takes 5kg of kit with them on a adventure trip ???) with more exposure it soon will be available as first optiosn when you google "XTR rear racks"..so nobody have to search too far again when in market for a good, practical, strong and pretty rear rack for their bike.
Well done GStry, it was the best money spent in long time on my bike.

Please tell the world of XT R/X drivers that this rack can be bought somewhere. This looks really awesome!!!! If yes .... what's the prize? Other racks have a 5Kg limit... ppffttt.
Nice job on the rack.
Greets from Belgium.

GStry 22-03-11 08:03
