fourteen (14) tooth front sprockets
I ordered six sprockets ages and ages ago from the UK (2 for me the rest to make the postage cheaper) my package arrived today with a message from customs.
The parcel was intercepted, x-rayed - thought to contain prohibited items and opened. So XT660 sprockets look like ninja throwing stars. Tomorrow I am putting on my black pyjamas and practicing being "the invisible assassin" whilst I install it. But I just realised, damn the black ninja outfit is going to clash with the blue bike, I should of bought a black bike not a blue one. Can I perhaps be a blue ninja??? Meanwhile if anyone else is after a renthal 14 tooth sprocket in Australia, (I tried all the Australian surpliers and I couldn't get one) I have four spare - $25 each including postage. PM me if you are interested. |
Nice one King O Sabi.

I'll take one, PM you.

Installation of mine oh what a difference it makes.
GULG has a listing on the forums that tells you how to do an installation using a long bar and socket (32mm).
"stand on the right side of the bike, bike on the sidestand, in gear and stand on the brake pedal, reach over the bike, and pull on the strong arm (that is connected via a socket to the sprocket nut), it works perfectly. If you are worried about your back, rest your chest on the bike and use your shoulders/arms." Now this was all well and good until the moment that decided to really pull up hard, forgot that the right foot was cramped up for a reason (covering the rear brake), the moment I moved my right leg, that let the bike roll forward off the side stand and almost toppled over. Luckly nobody around to laugh. It has inspired me to write a ditty to the pentamic meter of "the 100 green bottle" song. Six renthal sprockets, 14 teeth on all, six renthal sprockets, 14 teeth on all, Woottonboy installed the first and almost had a fall that leaves five renthal sprockets and no ******* more. five renthal sprockets, 14 teeth on all, five renthal sprockets, 14 teeth on all, I'll be keeping a spare, I won't need to import no more that leaves four renthal sprockets they're going out the door. four renthal sprockets, 14 teeth on all, four renthal sprockets, 14 teeth on all, NUTT wants one in Melbourne, he was quick to score that leaves three renthal sprockets and no ******* more. |

Got your PM - no offence taken. Maybe I should take Kev's lead and put a disclaimer on the bottom of all my posts!!! Maybe nobody was around to laugh at the time, but it's made me chuckle this morning.... and it's still only 7:12.. |

Three renthal sprockets, 14 teeth on all, Shhh Santa's taking one to AussieMasada down in Tassie that leaves two renthal sprockets soon there will be no more. Anyone else before I put the remaining ones on ebay? |
Hi Wootonboy, just wondering if you had any of these sprockets left?
Also, having had yours installed for a while now, how are you finding it? I know with my KTM 200 changing the rear to a 45 from a standard 48 made a big difference in terms of making first gear more usable - I am interested to find out what a reduction in front sprocket to a 14 (assume standard is 15?) on the XT660X does to improve the legs of each gear, my aim is to give each give more legs however I love the torque of the bike (particularly in 3/4/5) so am concerned about reducing this too much. Thanks |
Yes
Yes, still have a couple left (to busy over the last couple of months to list on fleabay). Smaller front appears to increases torque, reduces top end speed by about 10km/h. So top speed is now; 165km/h, instead of 175km/h, (oh dear how sad). The increased off the mark zip is great. Particularly tooling around in bush at low speed on the XTR660, the small front sprocket takes away tendency to stall. Sent you a PM.

Hello mate. Do you need to change the chain when using this sprocket or is it just a case or re-adjusting?
|
Fit the 14T sprocket, adjust the chain & you are on your way.
|
woottonboy you said your top speed was 175kph now 165kph what you running on rear? im using 15/45 and top speed for me is 150kph bike is screaming so i back of to 100kph....have a rear sprocket 47 from kev which ive yet to try

gps reads sustained a 165km/h flat out
google earth the test strip, Coolongolook to Bulahdelah
specs: - standard 45 rear - front 14 - engine standard -premium juice -rider (scared) 95kg. over 150km/h on the XT660R is like 210 on the XJR1300. |
not much longer now
Two renthal sprockets, 14 teeth on all,
Two renthal sprockets, 14 teeth on all, Gearing down 4 an adventure rally, Razerback doesn't want to stall That leaves one renthal sprocket $25 to your door. (I'm amazed at my own poetic ability at times or doesn't rhyming to green bottles count !!!) |

Hello.
Just 1 question about gearing down/up. Will i have to install a speedohealer? or it wont change anything? Reason im asking is because ive heard that it DOES change the reading when changing the gearing?!? |
Checked it on Sunday in mph. Speedo reads 7 mph over with 14 tooth sprocket on. You could fit a sat-nav to check your speed .

Tried it at the weekend with the speed 'warning signs' before the entrance to a local village - you know the smiley/frowny face ones. Doing 60 on the clock I was actually doing 54mph according to the face. Doing 40 on the clock I was actually doing 33mph However if you do the maths at 60 you would really be doing 56 and at 40, 37mph. So the camera probably got me before I had reached a steady speed. I personally will not be fitting a healer as its the right side of the law. |
Alright, thanks alot.
Guess ill just have to get used new readings then. :) Might buy a speedohealer later for proper reading. |
Personally, from my own experience I did put a 14T front sprocket on when I first started a bit of trail riding on the Ten. But I found that this hooked quite quickly, but then I was riding in very aggresive and dirty conditions.
I did find that when I went back to a 15T front I also had a bit more confidence and didn't notice the difference as I was riding faster on rough ground. From my last little episode I would always stick to the 15T front as when my chain snapped there was certainly quite a bit of chafing on the steel plate that runs over the chain on the engine casing. I'm sure this has prevented any damage to the casing there. If I was to change the gearing I would certainly get a 48T rear sprocket (I do have a 46 spare from somewhere in any case?), this I believe would also give the chain an easier life as it runs over the drive sprocket with it being a bigger diameter. Hope this makes sense, if it's a crock of poo then I'll get my coat!!!!!:034: |
K,s
So, just out of interest, how many K,s are you guys getting from a set of sprockets and chain. I'm about to klick over 20 thou and only just seeing signs of wear on the teeth. I think i've been liberal with the lube most of the time with a lot of beach time.
|
I reckon will be 14,000 miles to new chain and sprockets. On my third front sprocket at 12,700 miles. Running 14 tooth and std rear. Tends to be a bit chewy on fronts.

last renthal sprocket
One renthal sprockets, 14 teeth on all,
one renthal sprockets, 14 teeth on all, Sonya's getting a black 08, swapping over isn't such a chore That leaves no renthal sprockets time to order more... (Sonya is the love of my life but is buying a same bike so that we can share spares on trips - former HONDA XR650 fan.) |
Just ran down the Wooton way after Xmas. Why sit on the highway? Just found this forum, so am very interested in a 14 t sproket. Fat chance there's any left! Did the Eastern creek track day last month on the XT660X and got 166kph on 15/45, but boy can it corner. 55degree track temp really helped. Pulled out so much harder than The R6's. The only thing I could'nt out corner was a KTM 300 Super Retard. Iwant to do that again. We should organise a 660 day. Ps Would luv a sproket. Regards Gary.
