Overcoming problems at high altitude
Hi guys,
Tried to find some information on dealing with high altitude but couldn't find anything so apologies if I've missed it. We're currently on 2 '07 XT660R's and have made it to Kashgar having crossed the 3750m Torugart pass. The bikes aren't liking the altitude too much and tend to stall in 1st gear. We're slightly concerned as tomorrow we're heading for the Kunjerab Pass which at 4755m is a full km higher. We're both running Metal Mule exhausts (one newer with the lamda on it and the other without - we bought the O2 sensor from someone on this forum.) and long ago followed the instructions on here to make the bike run richer. My question is, what should we be doing to help the engine deal with the altitude? Any help much appreciated! |
get more oxygen into it!or lean the mixture if you can.
try removing part of the airbox????? you need Kevs advise lol, not mine!! |
Fit a turbo, that'd get more air in :gay:
Seriously though, you've got a choice of either leaning the mixture out to correct the AFR or.. find a way of getting more air into the engine. Obviously, where you are, you're in no position to fit a stage 2 or anything like that so either snorkal removage or lean out whatever fuel mod you've got fitted. Failing that, I'd also be inclined to check the main air filter, make sure it's not full of crap because that wouldn't help matters either. If you're not bothered about noise, remove any DB killers in the exhaust too as they'd help the engine breathe a little better and let more air through it. |
Riding in high altitudes, i set the CO back to factory settings and turn KEV-MOD to 0.
Do run a DNA Stage2 though. Remove snorkel, check/clean/change airfilter, remove the mesh on the clean side of the filter, re-route engine breather away from airbox (clog the air-box conection) just 2 weeks ago did about 5.000mtr with pilion - no problems! http://picasaweb.google.de/torque62/...0km1118082010# (Fotos 57 -68) salu2, Joe |
thanks guys,
ended up just leaning the CO mix on both bikes and fully loaded they both cruised to 5000m without nissing a beat (unlike the transalp in the group which got towed up the last 500m! |
if you hadn't removed lambda sensors you wouldn't have to do a thing.
