Engine Management Light XT660Z Tenere
Hi All,
Sorry if this has already been covered, had a quick look can't find anything on the forum... Has anyone had any experience of the engine management light comming on? Mine came on yesterday although the bike appeared to be running fine. Pulled over switched off, tried to restart but although something sounded like it was powering up (relay or some electrical gizmo?) engine would not turn over. Switched off, left it for a few minutes, switched back on, rev counter, speedo and warning lights did their usual dance, fired up all ok no lights showing, rode rest of the day and this morning fine. Any ideas? 58 plate warranty up November!! (By the way, looking at some of the previous threads, paint on my engine cases bubbling from beneath as well. The bike hasn't seen too much winter weather) |
Hey there, Welcome to the forum!
First off Ade, could you go out to your bike, flick the kill switch off and put the key in the ignition. Then, hold the SELECT and RESET buttons down together and switch the ignition on. Keep the buttons held down until "DIAG" appears on the display. Once that appears, you can then release the buttons and then press them down together again to enter the "DIAG" mode. Once there, you should see a number starting from 01, press either select or reset untill that number goes to 61. This is where you need a pen and paper handy because next to that 61 will be another number. If that other number is 00 then there is no error code. If however, there is another number write it down and let us know what it is. If there is more than one fault code, this number may change every 2 seconds to display all the fault codes, write these down as well. For more information regarding fault codes, look here: http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?...ht=fault+codes Should tell you all you need to know. Once you've done that, let come back and let us know what codes there are and take it from there! Cheers. |
hi, failing that check the battery terminals for corrosion or looseness
|
Thanks for the quick reply!
Tried the proceedure but can't get into the "diag" display. Goes to the mph/kmh switching stage but then once the eight seconds are up the clock starts to alter then nothing else. Was tempted to try it with the kill switch in the run position but looking at the thread concerned that this may clear the fault codes? Hmmmm........ |
Remember, you need to hold down the select and and reset buttons together. To press and hold them at the same time..
Then, whilst holding the buttons down, turn the ignition from off to on. If you don't make sure you hold the buttons down, nothing will happen! If you've never done it before, keep persisting. Took me a few attempts to get it right. Its kinda hard with those buttons to know whether you've pressed them or not. Keep trying. |
Dazmatic, this procedure may work for the X and R versions but to my knowledge and experience does not work on the Z'ed.
Just a thought. |
Oh really?
I thought it was the same for all bikes! Ah well then, in which case ignore me  |

On the Z there is a way to count how many times the light flashes and know the Error COde, it's explained at the User Manual. |
There is a Diag mode but you need the Yamaha diagnostic tool to read it, otherwise use the flash code off the dash.
|
Thanks guys,
Nice to know there are people out there willing to help! Confident I'm holding the two buttons down as I've had to do this to change the mph/kmh display (picked this up off the forum as well. Instructions in the handbook wouldn't alter the display, dealer was going to change the clocks as faulty!) Calling into the dealer soon, I'll see what they say and keep you posted. Thanks again. |
Hi All,
This has happened again (yesterday) but no amount of battery connection / disconnection would get the thing to start again as it had before. Noticed that with the ignition switch on when the earth lead was re conected to the battey "6_09 017" showed briefly on the speedo display. Also the engine management light is flashing 4 slow then 6 fast. Trip home on the back of a recovery wagon... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Adrian. |
Error 46 is lack of juice in the battery.
Either the battery is knackered or it's not getting charged by the bike. |
Thanks!
A few have suggested battery problems I'll start there. Only thing is, when this has happened before, after leaving it for a while with the battery disconected it has started fine once the engine management light has finally stopped flashing, like something has reset itself. If the battery was flat causing the problem would'nt it stay flat and not start again (if you see what I mean). Any road I'll try charging / jumping and see what happens. Many thanks for your help. Adrian. |
Hi Ade, I have a similar problem:
I have installed a tracker in my T and left in the motorcycle for more than 1 week, after that the battery was drained, so I take out and went to Yamaha for a complete recharge. After that, I was unable to ride for 1 week more, and then, had a small ride of 50km to charge a little bit. But, the engine light is always on. I went to Yamaha again, and used the Diagnostic tool, but we didn't found any fault code. We tried to change de battery, but still, the same error. I came back home, and discover that, when I put the high been front light, the engine fault light go off, but when I put low been light, the light pops out again.... |
Hi both,
Jump started the bike yesterday, started and ran ok with the jump battery connected, engine management light went out. Not that I am very good with a volt meter but it looks as if the battery is totally flat and not taking any charge (I think the meter was reading around 10v when running at 3000rpm, should be around 14v or above?). Hoping that the bike is trying to charge but the battery is that shot it cant receive it? Bike is 2008 so battery quite old. Will buy a new battery and see what the meter says then! Many thanks for your help. Adrian |
The only diference is my battery is charging, after the first loss of charge, it's charging normally. I think in your case is better you buy a new one to replace this old one.

Advice
Hi!
I went for ride on cold day (-1*C) with new rear +1 rear sprocket. I did some warm up and then pushed my bike up to 80mph (120kmph). After 20 mins of ride yellow engine check light came on. I stopped and checked my bike. I noticed that oil level was just on low mark so slowly went back home and topped up. I got yellow light coming up on my XT660Z 2009 model. It flashes 4 long + 2 short. I can read from service manual that error code 42 is; "Speed sensor, neutral switch" and it gives "YES" in both startability and driveability. I would like to ask what shall I do in this case? Shall I ride my Tenere to the Yamaha or tow it? It is just a matter of deleting that error or shall I fix something? If bike can start and drive it means there is nothing wrong, well nothing wrong with important bits. Not sure what to do, can anybody help please? |

You will need to test both components and the associated wiring if nothing is obvious doing the above. This is quite easy to do with a multimeter. It isn't entirely necessary to hook up to a diagnostic tool. The fault code and fail-safe will be reset automatically as soon as the problem is fixed and the bike is ridden at over 30 km/h. Fault code 42 has the fail-safe action of fixing the gear input to the ECU as fifth. It will not have any ill effects on running (that you will notice anyway) and you will be fine to ride it to a dealer. |

Oil was low, I assume, due to "the service time" which is a bit late due to bad weather and bike is still use to commute to work etc. I am about 300miles (500kms) past my service schedule so I did expected oil to be low. I just got my chain and sprocket changed in the rain and I had no will to stay out there for longer so oil needs to wait a bit. It was very first ride at higher speed after chain/sprocket upgrade. Anyway, thanks for quick reply. I will have a look at those sensors and try do chop them out. Glad to know that I do not need to use any computers to fix it and old fashion combination of hammer and screwdriver will do. :D Thanks. |
All good
Problem is gone.
I done nothing, apart of topping up the oil. It had to be cold weather and/or very dirty bike. Once temp. went up and all mud felt off bike all is back to good, yellow engine check light is off. Just to let you know guys, it is Tenere. Use it, just use it. :smilies1349: |
