Givi side case

OK guys, early days yet but I've been browsing around for side luggage for the XTX for some roadtrippin this summer.

I've spotted one of our members ( stefanpriftis) with a pair of Givi T411 (think thats their name) which looked pretty nice and useable. I was going to send him a PM but noticed that he hasnt posted once since joining in October. See links...

When I called my local Givi dealer I was told that soft sling over side luggage dont work with the XTX and that I will need to get some hardcases with the frames. I dont want the hard cases cos a) I think they look poo and b) they cost A LOT!!

Has anybody had experience with these, or can enlighten me with any relevant information?! Ta very much ;)

CaptMoto 02-01-07 20:36

you really want me to express my opinion on luggage on this bike?

ask yourself this question: would you put a roof rack on a porsche? :119:

you wouldn't? then take the train mate, or use a car and keep the bike for raw hooliganism!!! :smile[2]:

Denny 02-01-07 20:49

Each to their own :003: I'm not keen on them either(messes with my mojo)which is why I'm after the sling over cases so they will be off the bike when I get to where I'm going, allowing me to be a hooligan in unchartered territories :laughing7:

If I ever own a porsche (which I wont) I'll slap on a roof rack, tie a goat on them and post some pics just for you :occasion17:

CaptMoto 02-01-07 20:59

Fair point but as I've said that is just my opionion :p

Storm 02-01-07 21:13

Denny, do you have afermarket cans on your XT? If so, they run cool enough to use throwover panniers. I have some oxford ones. They are a ***** to fit securely, but they work OK. (Just try and avoid the header pipe connections to the cans, they run fackin' hot!)

Denny 03-01-07 09:11

Yep I've got a pair of CCC cans. Cheers Storm ;)

I'm looking forward to seeing everyones response to this as I am soon going to be looking at luggage solutions for my trip in the summer... so far I have four bunjies and a bum bag :nike:

(if anyone else knows a better way to transport ones bum I'd love to know)

"When I called my local Givi dealer I was told that soft sling over side luggage dont work with the XTX"

-It works...(Tubular side-case holder)

Do you mean it only fits with the tubular side case holder?

stefanpriftis 19-03-07 22:49

yes...

Denny 20-03-07 05:35

So when you take the bags off you still have the ugly tubular frame there!

What is SW Motech
The SW Motech luggage system represents a new evolution of the Motorcycle luggage market.
SW Motech luggage systems are characterized by their inconspicuous, optically subtle design and are compatible with all major brands of hard luggage including: Givi, Kappa, Hepco & Becker and more.
The Alu-rack top rack can be used either alone or in combination with the Quick-lock side carriers.
Both the Quick-lock top case adaptor plate and Quick-lock side carriers can be quickly mounted on or removed from the bike using Quick-lock fasteners.

That was at the top of my list too... still not cheap though :sad1:

I bit the bullet and got a full system for my XT - I need to take a lot of stuff to work on a daily basis. I looked at the SW Motech stuff but as I already had the Givi top rack and box I was not sure if they would fit together. It would be cool to be able to remove it but as I use the stuff daily I don't really mind.

I chose the Kappa tubular side racks and Kappa 40l panniers - total cost was approx 280 (Rack 80 and panniers 200 - Givi system would have cost about 350 and they are made in the same factory!)

It does make the bike look a little wierd but I don't care about that. I think someone said "would you do this to a Porsche?". Well, delusions of granduer aside, the XT is NOT a Porsche! For me, it's a daily workhorse and now I have a very competant overland tourer.

Edit: You can get the thinner boxes from Givi and Kappa (about 100 and 90) which are 21l ones, they are hald the thickness and might make the bike keep it's slim tail section. I have to be mindfull that I now can't filter as much as previously and take it easy in car parks but horses for courses!

SJA 22-03-07 11:57

Totally agree

I've got the Hepco Becker rails and Gobi Panniers (pics somewhere on this site). My bike needs to be able to perform dual roles, fun and a work-horse when I go off to North Wales with all my mountaineering gear etc.... I did try throwovers which scratched the plastic exhaust guards and could potentially melt if they came into contact with the silencers. You pay's you're money and takes you're choice! Depends on how important the cosmetic appearance of the machine is to people I suppose, personally I'm not fussed that's why I got the 'R'.

Did you have the H B guard rails on at the time? I dont really have a problem with melting cos I've got the CCC cans, but I wouldnt want to scratch them :018:

midlife crisis 22-03-07 13:40

I don't mind the tubes. Surely they act as a bit of protection too, like crash bars for the back end?

SJA 23-03-07 19:07

No rails when I had the throwovers, much prefer the hard luggage option now I've got the 'very indulgent' Gobi panniers. Still think the SW Motech option is a good compromise if you want to be able to remove them when you're not toting stuff about.

Having only just been able to look at this pic, I dont think will be able to fit these side case holders as I will be removing the whole rear light/plate unit & fitting a tidy OTR led job.

SJA, when you say scratched, exactly how badly did they scratch? I really dont want to mess my lovely CCC's up at all. Got any pics of the said scratches? Ta ;)

SJA 31-03-07 21:24

Denny, apologies for the late reply just got back from a week in the Lake District. Anyway scratches never really got bad because I only did the one trip with throwovers and then fitted the HB rails and panniers. What it did was put very fine scratches in the plastic exhaust covers and a few small chips in the finish, like paint chips. Too small to photograph. I guess if you have a metal or carbon fibre finish on your new silencers that wouldn't be an issue. Pictures of the HB luggage at; http://www.xt660.com/gallery/files/9...175_401956.JPG

Hi SJA! No probs about late reply, I still cant make my mind up!!

I'm gonna need them for summer anyway so I have plenty of time to make a decision. Thanks anyway :hello:

adam26 03-04-07 11:10

I deal with both Givi and SW Motech through work, you can fit Givi luggage to the Sw Motech range you just needed to buy the adaptor plates. If your interested PM me as I can put some discounts together on the Givi boxes.
