Some aesthetic questions and mods.

Right guys....

4 things i wanna change/look into on the XTX

1. Bottom mudguard, what's it's function/purpose ?
2. Fork springs, is there an alternative to Kev mod (which i have already) to stiffen the front end up. Even if it's new springs/internals i'll give it a whirl
3.Top fork shroud, can it be removed? There's one on Ebay for an 09, but glancing at mine yesterday it seemed integrated ?
4. Shock spring/alternatives ?

I put 15w fork oil in mine with Kev spacers and droped the forks through the clamps 10mm I would think the lower mud gaurd stops some of the crap being thrown off the back of the wheel up the engine.

I assumed that too, but wondered if the brace had any function to it ? I can live with the dirt side of things as i'm obsessively clean with the bike and don't do rain.

Ironically Im looking for a low front mud guard like the xtx..small black plastic bit. I wonder if it wil fit the Tenere? There are no bike shops here for 30 miles so when I get near one Im going to see if the distance apaprt from the fork legs are the same on both bikes and how it fixes.

Replaced my front springs with hyprpro ones and changed the fork oil to 15w and this has made the front alot better

Lovely...where you get them from mate and were they specific XT660 springs or just generic springs that happend to fit ?

weeksy 04-07-10 22:52

Hmmm found a couple of options. Just a question now whether to go for just the front end for now or do front and rear at the same time.

Well, i've just spent an hour or so stripping, removing and sorting some bits.

First thing off was the air filter cover (silver piece in middle of bike), closely followed by the rear pillion rails and the footrest/heel plates. Then onto the front and removed the lower mudguard. sadly i've had to leave the metal bracket in place as i get the impression it may be functional... but will research that more. Minor concern is that the mudguard was integrated into the fork lower covers, which gives them the potential for flapping about maybe ?

Last job was exhaust relocation, which i managed to get about 1" higher. They're still obviously not wonderful... but a fraction better.

All in all a decent lunch-hours work i rekon. Before and after pics

OK, question time again.

Fit the new springs without Kev fork spacer mod ?
With 10W oil as per description ?

weeksy 05-07-10 16:34

Right then... here's the latest pics... Great bike to work on... every job is 5 mins :)

Looks great 'cept for the last stage...a bit too bare IMO.

I think the metal brace on the small mudguard is to stop the front forks from flexing and bowing too much when you brake sharply so leaving it on is a good option.

Do like the look of the bike with out the fork strouds but not too sure about it on the head light area, think a bodged set where the strouds where removed from where the actual forks slide on and then the rest left on. But thats my own opinion. Still looks a cracker bike:ne1::clap:

I think it's still on there & yeah it's a stabilisermajig. OTR has a thicker/stronger version than the OE part.

Good little mods but the shroud removal is a mod too far for me.

chester0_1972 05-07-10 22:10

Looking good. On a side note, are you running a pirelli rear and a conti front. How do you find handling, does it make much difference.

Yup.

Can't say it bothers me mate, never noticed much difference when it comes to tyres. Even when back in the racing days, i'd happily run mixed pairs etc.

weeksy 05-07-10 22:18

Thanks for the input lads.. i'm thinking you're probably right.

chester0_1972 05-07-10 22:57

Thats good to know. I've mismatched tyres on bikes in the past and some were fine some weren't.

Mirrors off and fork protectors back on.

Very much debating the LC4 front end mod now.. HMmmmmmm

maxwell123455 06-07-10 20:35

Stop thinking about what it looks like and would this that or the other work best, get out and ride her like you stole it!!!!!:sbike::HappyRoll_ANPIUI:

Tony660x 06-07-10 21:40

Much better, do you miss the rear grab handles? I understand the clean lines thing but I find the ability to lug the back end round using the grab handles is worth their inclusion to stay on the bike. May just be me though.

weeksy 06-07-10 21:46

IT's easier now i've removed the mirrors Tony, with them there yes it was a bit tougher. But to be honest it's not common that i need them.

Maxwell, i did... this evening :) ... IT's not often that it's realistic for me to ride due to small child.
