will not do damage but it is a waist of money, with the original 660 engine compression 95 ron is enough.

There is also a theory that most people are using the 95ron at the gas station so it is more fresh then the more expensive fuels, but as said it is only a theory.

If You are using Your bike as a taxi, there is a difference how much 98/99 costs compared to 95...:BaseballHat_LNY2EG:

I think if Your towns 98oct runs out of date maybe You should think about moving closer to civilication?:smileinbox:

from my observation in most stations the 98 or 100 pumps are always empty, but this is not the issue the issue is that every fuel above 95 ron will not give any benefit to the motor it is not cleaner (like some people think) and it doesn't have any higher quality of some kind, the motor of the XT doesn't know if you run 95 or 100.
I am surprised that in the era of the internet people still don't know what is the meaning of octane.

If You are running standard XT, Pegaso is right that it can be a waste of money to drive higher octane than 95.

I like to think that the higher the octane is the "safer" the fuel is to My engine in all driving conditions.

All the comments are good.
The XT660 engine only needs 95 RON according to the spec so this is all you need.
If it had knock sensor, then the engine management would optimise the ignition timing for the grade of fuel you use; which in the case of 99 RON, it could be beneficial.
However there is a twist.....
In the last 10 years or so, fuel companies who have started producing high octane fuel (think shell & BP), have been putting special additives in to improve engine running & clean at the same time. So you are not only buying a higher octane but also a chemically more advanced fuel.
So you may not be wasting your money when you buy premium fuel for your XT.
The best bet is to try it yourself. Run 4 tankfulls of your specific fuel & see what you get

The knock sensor allow the bike to use low grade fuels bellow 95 ron (like in poor countries) and it will react to pre-ignition, because fuels above 95 ron doesn't cause pre-ignition the knock sensor is redundant and no ignition timing will be change so bottom line a knock sensor can not detect between 95 or 100 octane in bikes with a compression rate like the XT.

I had been running my 07 XTX on RON 91 for quite a long time without the bike pinging. I tried my new one yesterday on RON 91 & it ran quite fine no problems.

My 04 XTX did not like RON91 fuel it used to ping at low rpms. I did once mention that the timing was adjusted by the factory on 07 ECU's>.

How much is the difference between these fuel types in Your country?

In Finland the most common fuelgrades are E95 (1.449) and E98 (1.479).
(Price Euros per litre today in Kuopio city.)

As You can calculate I wont get much savings by running E95 compared to E98 so I use the E98 hoping that Im buying a better product...

There were 2 points I was tying to get across:
- Without knock sensor + variable timing engine ignition management system, higher octane than recommended fuel will not improve the engine performance (in theory anyway) unless there is a problem with the engine
- The high octane fuel in the UK (shell, BP, maybe others also) contains additional ingredients to help the running & long term performance of the engine which can be a benefit to everyone irrespective to the first point I mentioned
In the UK we have 98~102 for high octane the price difference is about 7 pence /ltr (10 € cents?).

at 60mpg a few extra p per litre might add an extra quid to a fill up.

I'm a high milage rider, I tend to stick to the Premium fuels, more for the cleaning effects than expecting better performance per se.
