Brake Fluid - Top up or Replace

Hi All

I've had my 2006 xtx almost a year now and the rear brake fluid is near the low mark. Do I just top up the fluid? Or should I drain and replace all the fluid?

If anyone can point me to the correct post for this if it has already been posted..

Cheers!

When the brake fluid is low & there are no leaks, it normally means your brake pads are almost finished. How thick are your brake pads?

If the pads are OK, I would replace the whole fluid in your case that your XT is a 06 model.

Thanks Kev, sorry for the following, probably obvious questions! Do I just check the pads by looking at them? or do I need to remove the caliper and pads? I have taken some pics, do they seem worn to you?

Also have taken a pic of front brake cylinder as it has never changed since I got the bike, there is a white bubble in the bottom right and looks like the inner seal is coming off on the bottom left of the glass window

Is there any posts on step-by-step process for changing pads and replacing fluid?

Thanks mate

Brand new rear brake pad linings measures 6mm, the lining & metal backing is 9mm. The lowest I would let it go would be 4.5mm total thickness, that would give you a lining thickness of around 1mm to 1.5mm.

If you measure from the brake pad metal to the disc you can work out the pad thickness. The inner pad will be 1mm less in thickness then the outer pad.

By the looks of your brake fluid I would be changing it. There is no procedure that I know of on the forum, the steps are in the W/Shop manual.

I am busy making the Service instructions that will include these items for the mod book as we speak.

Just looked at a pic of new ones and I think the pads need changing soon also, will have a look in the manual and get onto changing the fluid and pads

Cheers Kev

I get my pads from Greece, $40.00 cheaper then Yamaha Australia. Comes in a week.

Only bleed the brakes once you have fitted the new pads, otherwise it will over flow when you push the piston back.

Hey Kev, I must of missed your reply mate, where abouts in greece? I think it's time I order some! And about that mod book you mentioned, how do i get my hands on one?

Cheers mate
