What do you think of the XT1200Z Super Tnr?
Multiple choice poll time ladies and gents.
Let's see what you think, vote and then express your views, thanks. (pssst... Big Brother from Yamaha is watching) |
I like the 1200Z. I will never own one as adventure RTW is not for me. Too heavy for off road but then I guess this is a comfy road bike really. I think some of the 660's faults have been addressed on this bike but then to be honest I dont think you can compare them.
Worth having in the range if only to give a non BMW option. |
Capt'n,
There is a choice missing, -> It doesn't live up to the hype That would be my choice. Yamaha wound the world up with promises of a desert raider, a RTW bike but the reality is it's just another bike to fit into the GS road warrior bracket, not the KTM challenger all the hype suggested. Oh, and another choice. -> Like I'm going to spend 14K on a bike I can't see before I get delivery. (That is if Mr Yamaha is really interested) |
well, since you're asking.
I prefer the styling of the 660. The ST is just a bit too bulky to my taste. Looks too much like a Varadero as well. And those plastic tank/radiator protectors look very cheap. The ST will be a cracking long distance tourer on paved roads, I'm sure. But all the "adventure" buzz Yamaha is selling around it is just marketing BS (pardon my French). It's actually just a beefy TDM with a shaft drive and a couple nice electronic gizmo's. But I'm sure its looks will appeal to the Ewan and Charlie fans... Pricewise it should have been cheaper than the Beemer to really compete with it imho. |
As a GS competitor- I like it.
As a 990 ADV competitor (which is what the hype got me thinking\hoping)- I don't like it. I won't be buying for the same reason that I won't buy a GS 1200. The bike just don't fit my needs\wants. And I think that it costs too much. If Yamaha want to take a big chunk out of the GS market share, they should have priced it cheaper than the GS. |
I think this year Ill just bite the bullet and get me a nice 990 adv white. Im tired of waiting for the perfect bike. The Ten is a great machine but it just doesn't do it for me, my gf and our luggage. Was nice dreaming at S10 though...
|
If I was going RTW 2-up this would be an option. My initial dissappointment has calmed down a bit, but still, not a bike for me. They could have been brave and covered new grounds with this one, but, probably because of how the market looks atm, they chose to be followers instead of pioneers.
The presentation of the bike reminded me of the hillarious Ipad introduction, where they took a Ipod, made it a bit bigger and called it a revolution. I hope it becomes a hit. |
Yamaha have missed a trick with this bike..
If the style of the 660 had been copied and grown in physical size alittle, Kept the off road abilitys of the 660, slotted in a powerful sub litre parallel twin and kept the bike simple... Then i think yamaha would of struggled to meet demand.. As it is its just another road bike with long travel suspension and off road clothes. |
totally agree with you banksy.
youve hit the nail on the head. |
oh yeah, one more thing.
what's with the "no test rides" nonsense? Does Yamaha seriously expect people to buy the bike without ever having even sat on it. While the direct competitors (GS mainly, but also 990Adv and maybe by extension even some more road-oriented long suspension bikes) can be experienced first hand for a couple of hours before spending 14k GBP. |

Have no idea why they do this online "limited edition" first year and then start pushing the stripped down version to the dealers upcoming year. Building interest? Low production volumes? |

+1 on the above comments |
I have no idea how they got from the 'desert-Tuareg-Paris-Dakar' bike show concept bike of a few months ago... to this.
If I had ever been seriously interested in this bike I'd be cancelling my order now out of spite! Then again I'm more than happy with the Tnr and to be honest I reckon this will sell. I don't like the Varadero either but I see plenty around. These bikes make good road tourers but the RTW bit got lost in translation, I reckon. Vive la difference. |
I definately wont be getting one. I prefer it to the Suzuki and Honda looks wise, but that doesn't mean its good. I personally think it will be too heavy for serious off roaders. Lastly and most importantly its FAR TOO EXPENSIVE. :tongue9:
|
First off im not getting one as its way too expensive for me and expensive in biking terms (also only 22 so insurance etc would be a killer), secondly the looks are growing on me but the front end still looks a bit wierd to me, thirdly i still think it should be a 1000cc and not a 1200cc, ok 1200cc is nice but when do you ever need all that power and why in an off roader type bike!!
Not too sure they will sell too many as they claim they are not doing demo bikes/rides, so my question is to yamaha would you spend 13000 on something you had only sat on and never ridden? |
Test rides are a strange one, back in the day when I could 1st buy a bike new dealers and test rides were like oil and water . Of all the bikes I've had only ducati ever gave a test ride of same model. BMW didn't have a GSA when I got mine (pre Ewan an Charlie) so it was order in, KTM didn't have any advs to test only 1 to sit on (2ndhand sale ex kielder ditch) so maybe over the 20yrs I've become accustomed to not having one? the only change I can see is the online reservation gimmick which they've used for the new vmax . speaking of which has anyone checked it's price 20k+ eek!

Its not a bad looking bike for their chosen market. Its just not my cup of tea. It is very costly thats for sure.
Regarding test rides, I can see why manufacturers are moving away from them in general as I was a main offender in the past of gratuitous test riding just for fun and with no intention of buying. Sorry about that but it was fun. It also taught me that I wanted a bike between 600 and 900 and no more or less. Each to their own and I am sure there will be some guys out there with a mid life crisis and a bankers bonus who might be very happy and I wish them all the best. |

I'd like to see the initial reports from people who take this serious off roading, I'd like to be proven wrong but fear that I wont.:( |

I have owned 5 yamaha, and this one is the WORST bike they have make in years, maybe if I see and test one I will change my mind, meanwhile I will consider it a big and fat varadero and yamaha engineers should think about adding a reverse gear at 2011.
have fun, j. |
Im not a fan of all the technology which is why I didnt get the BMW 800Gs as its not needed in my opinion and adds more risk if you ride away from normal routes. I do think its going to be a superb touring bike with ample power and if nothing fails it has alot of nice extra toys.
Between the GS and new Tenere I would buy the Tenere without doubt. |
I really do not understand what the fuss is about!
Yamaha went for the GS market and who ever read their Go Beyond yada yada teasers knew that this was the target. the more I ride my 660 off road the more it is obvious to me that a 1200 true off roader is nonsense. If I went for a RTW type bike this bike would be very high on my list. It has top of the line systems and Yamaha has a good reliability reputation.( I hope the fixed the regulator plug issue because I have a feeling that this bike is priced for downtown big shot lawyers:protest:) . As I come from a country that is only 500 Km long and less than 60 wide and none of our neighboring countries is to keen on me crossing the boarder on a bike or any other form so long distance riding in not an option, and since I am still quite a lousy off road rider that drops his bike once a trip at least I will stay with my 185 kg dry 660xtz for the moment. |
I want the motor for my XTX.

Today, I visited the Bikeshow in Dortmund, where Yamaha Germany had the new Super Tenere on display: in real life it looks way better then on the pics!
Solid built, not that biggish(except for the exhaust!). I was pleasantly surprised, hmmmm.... But, hell no, too expensive for me, not within my budget and I'm more then happy with my 660 Tenere. It proved that again today: it's a good bike, never missed a beat, even in the bad weather when I passed the border into Germany, snow, cold and wet and lots of salt on the road(near Essen there were even parts of highway where there was a speed limit of 60kmh!). But the Ten kept on runnin' strong, no worries! Yahoo!! Anyway, the new S10 looks mighty fine and if it does ride equally fine, they'll have a good competitor for the 1200GS Beemer. As of monday they can be ordered online, delivery probably in may. So Ray, good luck and have fun!! Greetz, Hans. |
So expensive I can't even be bothered to look at the spec.
TBH I would go for the R1200GS over it if I was going to part with that sort of cash as the residual value will almost certainly be better and the aftermarket parts bin way bigger. |

You know you can't be trusted to leave mechanical things alone ! :002: |
If the pricing strategy of the S10 has anything resembling the Ducati's Multistrada 1200's, then the 'first edition' price of the S10 may not be too bad:
http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/news...00-price-msrp/
BTW, the ducati weighs only 190kg dry. |
Probably a good bike, and made to suit the purpose that people actually use BMW GS's for, to the T.
But I am most definitely not in. Monumentally underwhelming, Yamaha have obviously just copied word for word the BMW marketing plan. If faced with the choice I would buy the GS. Honda launched this bike back in 1998... with the Varadero, Yamaha took 12 years to come up with this (and it looks very similar) = wow thats lame. Realistically everyone wants the Super Ten to be a WR450 front fork a TDM engine and an XT660z rear end. Sub 1000 cc's Oh and its totally overpriced for where and who it is pitching itself against. |
cuckoo land
It looks good, but it's too heavy, too expensive, and you can't get a test ride. So "no", I won't be buying one.
|
I quite like it but not as it is.
It's way too expensive, and it's stupid to sell a bike people can't test ride. I considered test riding the new Multistrada, but thought that was expensive, compare that to the Yamaha for value, and the Yamaha just doesn't hit the right price spot I think. I really don't understand how anybody would buy one of these without test riding it. It's bad enough being an "early adopter" for any bike, it's crazy to buy a bike without trying, and it's completely bonkers, in my opinion, to buy one before there's been even any real reviews. It's a shame. |
I spoke to my dealer (Saunders of Knebworth) yesterday and got a delivery date for mine, 22nd June.
He told me that when he went to see the bike, he was so impressed that 2 days ago he ordered one too. My order mumber is 70ish and his is about 290. I orderd mine on the 15th March. I'm no genius but this suggests to me that as of about 29th March there have been 290 odd orders for this bike. This suggests that there is a massive take up for this bike despite what the stats above suggest. |

Just got back from Yamaha & saw the new XT1200.
First impressions I like it, much smaller than I thought, in fact I like it alot. |
I have had mine for 3 and a half weeks and love it.
Cheers Rick |
