First from LDN to CT on New Tenere

Hi There all
I am enquiring as to if anyone else has done the London to Cape Town
run, (down the west coast, not the east like those whingers Charlie and
Ewan) on the new Tenere. If not myself and 2 others wish to claim tentative
line honours. We left on 10 June 09 and arrived in CT just under 3 months
later. We took 2x '08 Tenere and 1x '05 XTR. Any takers for our title??
Can provide proof if necessary for all the non-belivers.
Regards
XTLuke

Gas_Up_Lets_Go 25-11-09 09:32

Oh, yes, we need proof.....

Lot's of pictures, reports, what went wrong, what broke, how you think the bikes faired, comfort, camping/hotel, traverllers tails etc etc

so get :024: and show us the story....

trip

It would probably be best if everyone refrained from purchasing the Yamaha genuine engine protection bars for their Tenere as they end up cracking and cause the frame to start cracking also. I did the trip with Luke and there were a few problems with the bike one being that the air filter lets dust in and going through Congo you cant avoid dust. So now they are assessing the engine back here in Australia, Yamaha South Africa were the first to put a tech bulletin out about this and were we annoyed about this issue. Stop in Congo to do maintenance and find the filter housing full of dust, not good. Apart from a few other minor things the bike was great, the suspension was great considering the knocks it took from pot holes everywhere.

how do you upload pictures to this thread?
Cheers

Old Git Ray 30-11-09 09:49

This is a method that I use. It may not be the best but it works.

1), use a picture sizer program to reduce the size of your images to below 195kb and to 800x600 or below. I use this http://www.photo-freeware.net/bdsizer.php
2), sign up to a a free photo storage site like Photobucket or Smugmug (I use photobucket so can only quote for that) http://photobucket.com/
3), upload your piccys to it.
4), whilst writing a post, have photobucket open in another browser/tab and when you get to a place wher you want to insert a picture, go the PB site and hover your mouse over a picture and the words "Direct Link" appear. Click on it, beside it the link is highlighted. Right click on it and then click COPY.
5), Go back to the XT660.com page and click in the little yellow box with the mountain picture in. You will see http//: appear. Right click on it and paste your photo linke OVER it (not with it or you will end up with http://http://i310.photobucket.com/........)
6) The picture will appear in the text.

Good luck, its easier that it sounds, trust me, you will soon get used to it.

It's like slow-mo for beard growth!

Well done - nice to see the stock panniers in use for this kind of thing, they are tougher than they look.

Very good. Didn't spot that the first view. Another six months it would be catching in the chain. Its the off spring of ZZ Top!

Well done guys. Excellent work and proves to me that my bike is much better than me so I have no excusses.

GStry 01-12-09 09:29

Well done guys, would like to read the full story.

:080: how did the XT66R do ?

XTLuke 11-12-09 04:51

The XT 660 R probably went better than the Tenere's as much as I
hate to admit it. Way less problems, lighter and lower seat height an
advantage. For some reason even got less puctures than the Tenere's,
funny cosidering that it had the same Conti TKC 80's my Tenere had on it.
Given the choice I would still take the XTZ on the trip, not that I would do it
again, once is enough.
About the beard growth comments, if you turn up to a border post with a
big beard and dark sun glasses you are very intimidating to the clown
sitting at the desk with the entry/exit stamp. This was a distinct advantage
when crossing said borders, even better if one or more in the group can
grow a ginger beard!!!

idf000 11-12-09 10:23

Congratulations, guys. Very coolly done: start at the top, ride down, sorted! No histrionics, kidnap attempts, guns, fights. Where's the book deal going to come from?

What about fuel? The only real difference between the bikes, I guess.

Ha! The final touch for my plan for world domination!

Well done guys, must have been an awsome adventure. Scariest/hardest moment???

stuxtttr 11-12-09 16:56

Spot on can't wait for a full trip report

XTLuke 12-12-09 08:20

Sorry there probably won't be a full report as I for one am too lazy to write
it. Maybe one of the others will be keen. As for fuel, the bloke on the XTR
took a 6L jerry can so that made fuel range the same as a Tenere, also
coming across fuel didn't prove too hard. Only had to buy off the side of the road once, in Angola. Can be a little hard to get in West Sahara/Mauritania.
Also be aware real motorcycle engine oil cannot be brought betwwen Spain
and Cameroon. No real dodgy moments on the trip, we did not pay a bribe
the whole way down and managed to arrange all our visas basically hassle
free on route.

countvonaltibar 28-04-10 13:19

Great thread chaps, I think I'd like to give up the day job and do the same. Like the beard theory!

hillsy1302 26-06-10 13:54

Not bad.

But I've just completed the same trip as yours, ontop of a RTWer last year all on the same Tenere.

http://iansrtwtrip.blogspot.com/

Ignore the google map, need to update it!
Oh and it has 38,000 miles with no major problems although the engine is pretty rattley, will investigate when it's back home (it's somewhere on a boat on the Atlantic right now).

Mech 27-06-10 11:53

Des is coming home then!

pommie 07-08-10 08:09

im impressed with the journey but some of them pics look like they was taken in london (school kids around you and bikes)...bikes at tropic of cancer looks like some dusty car park...and as for pic at bottom of africa bloody photo-shop....nah only pissing around well done to you all, brings back memories of me going to sahara when i was 12yrs old and spending a month riding around sahara desert riding for hrs not seeing anything then in middle of desert you find a sign post...i remember seeing one 'no photographs taken' i wouldnt mind there wasn't anything to take pictures of except sand..
but once again well done, just wondered how did you get back to uk ride or plane or banana boat?
