incorrect speedo readings

hi can anyone tell if they have had problems with their speedo giving them the wrong readings, when im going about 70 mph its showing 90 mph. when i come to a stop it was reading 20mph and putting miles on the clock. Its only 8 months old so its still under warranty, any feedback would be helpful thanks.

m4rkevans,

Has the front or rear sprocket been changed from the original ones as this will through the speedo readings out and if so you will need to fit a speedo healer possibly.

Cheers

wow mate! never heard of that!
My 2007 XTX with standard sprokets, when I compared my speedo with my GPS, at 170 Km/h the real speed on the GPS was 160 Km/h.
However this is ..new:120:
Just go to the dealer and ask for a replacement under warranty.

*** Please let us know in the end what was the actual problem.

Whilst away last week I had the GPS on from time to time and discovered that mine reads 4mph quicker at motorway speeds i.e. 80mph displayed is actually 76mph on the GPS. Equally 37mph displayed is actually 35mph on the GPS. I am not worrying about this as I assume its just cable stretch and sort of normal (whilst bugging) and might stop me from breaking the speed limit in Guernsey (35mph) but now I know . . .

Definately take it back to be replaced. 20mph overead is taking the micky though and as you say, adding miles needlessley.

can you check something for me on that ... what is the reading when you increase engine RPM by opening the throttle while bike is not moving ... is it the same - 20 mph, or higher (increasing with the higher engine RPMs)

Im not sure where ive read it but its on here somewhere i think, someone else has had this problem and it was water and dirt ingress in the wireing loom, in the plugs. Their speedo was going up with the revs as well i think.
hope this helps?

You got there just before me. :headbang:

We did have one once, there was water entry in the plug on the top of the gearbox, the one below the throttle body. It would also pay you to remove your left frame side cover on the bike & look at the speedo connector behind the cover for corrosion & water entry.

Certainly some deviation is normal, 3-4mph is what I'd expect from a Car, bikes are usually more and most here found 7-10% deviation the norm for their Tenere so yours is unusually accurate!

I'd reiterate comments that as the bike is only 8 months old I'd be looking for a waranty fix regardless of cause.
