Odd Vibes at 4k-5k RPM

Hi all,

Ive done just over 4,000 miles on my ten and have just noticed this past week or so an odd vibe sensation between 4,000 5,000 rpm, particularly in 3rd and 4th gear. When it happens there is a very distinct change in engine noise and sensation though the bars and pegs.

As anyone else experienced this? Its my first bike so please feel free to suggest the obvious, as it may not be so to me! I did see a previous post referring to issues with the ally bashplate causing vibe issues, this can be discounted as I have the standard plastic cover.

Look forward to everyones thoughts.

Cheers,

Hi there, that can be a number of possibilities. Here is a link to previous discussion on this subject: http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?...ight=vibration

I believe my case is on the unique side. Another suggestion is if your gut tells you there is something wrong, go to the dealer where you bought the bike from, ride their test bike to compare (make sure it's full tank vs. full tank comparison as the vibration is most acute in my case), then ask them to compare. I did that and finally got their attention. Good luck.

Hi Josephau,
what was the result of your examination of these vibes?

Thanks for that, I'll pop down to the dealer

I get exactly the same thing, mines a 2000 mile 09. It's between 4 - 5k revs and is very apparent at those revs. I've just put it down to being a characteristic of a big single ?? It seems to go alright and other than a bit of odd feeling through the bars/pegs I don't pay much attention to it.
I do get a hell of a lot of bar weave/head shake at 95 + on the motorway though, a bit disconcerting but a little bit fun as well !

I'd be a bit concerned about that as its not something I get unless its wind induced. You're not gripping the bars too tightly are you?

I get get a bit of a wobble on mine at 85 on a banked sliproad when it goes downhill but other than that its pretty good if not entirely stable at speed (but that's down to the suspension I believe)

Also the Ten vibrates a lot more when cold, I find it takes a good 5+ miles for it to settle down properly, particuarly on a cold morning like we're starting to get.

Not sure if I can add much more to the thread I included, especially my post towards the end. Right now, I would say the main resonance and 'shaking' are much reduced to a point that I am satisfied. I wouldn't say it is sports bike smooth, the natural vibes from a single remain of course. Hope this helps.

I had the same thing but I don't think the bar weave has to do with the vibrations that originate from the engine, but it has to do with the front fork preload setting being too soft. I increased the preload and it is much more stable.

I'll get the dealer to have a fiddle when it's next in, best I don't touch it really, I'm a mechanical jinx and things will fall off ! That would prove more scary than the weave itself. http://www.xt660.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Did you get any luck on the vibration issue?
