Increasing the top speed ?

Gents,

Anyone tried to increase the top speed with gearing ?

Is it the gearing or power or even the wind that's holding the XT back ?

I'm off on track and need more than the 109mph i've managed on it.

But if i swap to a 16T front for example, will it not top out and still only be 109mph?

Will the Air filter 1&2 give me any more top end ?

Is my quest for top end futile ?

I don't mind losing a bit of grunt for now... If i can get the top end gain from it.

Hello weeksy... hmmm here we are again, there's a great debate XT vs R1? lol

You can change the sprockets on an XT *(see the attached excel spreadsheet, change the sprocket sizes to see how much you can get) but it's a 660cc xt after all, and a single cylinder bike at that, i.e. not designed to go over a certain speed, we've all been there trust me but the fun on this bike is on a twisty track on midrage power not on top speed.

Agree with all the above mate... however ParcAlgar isn't 3 sisters sadly :)

It's more a Donnington than a Lydd :)

the gsxr is fine from power and performance perspective. However it's a killer on the old knees (having had multiple surgeries on them) meaning that 3 days on track on the Gixer would be pure and utter hell.

The riding position and comfort of the XT660 is a good chunk of it's appeal for me...

Sell the Gixxer and buy a KTM 950 Super Enduro or SM...

(Gah! - I can't believe I actually recommended a KTM!)

LOL i sold a KTM950SMR 3 days before buying the XTX mate.

Had issues with having 6500 of bike sitting round doing nothing.

Hee hee - you fool!

I'm the same - got a Ducati Monster under a dust sheet - been out twice on it this year...

It would in theory raise your top speed but its getting the correct slip stream and enought power to get up to that speed.

I ran the standard gearing and got at least 105mph + but changed to the same as a 16tooth up front (i changed the rear as it came up here by WB) and could only reach 100mph flat stick, then again i did have a tank bag, tall screen, avon distanizas (semi knobbly tyres) and a fat 15stone rider

I would say get the stage 1 and 2 filters first, then get a 16tooth sprocket but also take the standard 15tooth with you as someone will be able to change the front sprocket back to the standard one if you want/find your not using it enough.

Hee hee - you laugh, but they are done up flippin' tight! - the real reason you'll need someone is to sit on the bike with the brakes on, while you wield a bloody long socket bar, just to crack the sprocket nut!

I don't think Maxwell was doubting your sprocket changing capabilities..... just saying it could easily be changed again. Although despite 50+ yrs of biking between us, me and t'other half always have that 'hmmm is the front sprocket nut wrong way round like?... are we doing this wrong?....gonna strip t'thread? discussion, we can never remember.:)
