Change KPM to MPH...

I have managed to change my speedo from MPH to KPM....does anyone know how I can change it back to MPH???

Thanks

FostersMonster 14-11-06 19:00

turn ignition on then hold in select button till it changes back :023:

Magnum 14-11-06 21:50

tried this but to no avail!!! any ideas?

CaptMoto 14-11-06 21:53

yes, midlife crisis had the same problem, and the solution is this: strange as it may sound you have to make sure that before you press select that the display is showing the total mileage or ODO, that is the only way for it to work. Do not ask me why :eusa_wall:

Magnum 14-11-06 21:58

going to try now....many thanks!

Magnum 14-11-06 22:20

captmoto u r the man! cannot tell you how much of a pain in the backside that was!! Not too good at converting KPH into MPH at 7am in the morning!!!:eusa_dance:

CaptMoto 14-11-06 22:30

Storm 20-01-07 17:51

OK guys,

Got a good one for you...

Just fitted the replacement dash unit that I bought from ebay. It works fine and I have re-coded the keys - no problem.

Being from Germany, the dash came set to KM/H, and I have tried the suggestions earlier in this thread, but to no avail.

Maybe someone from mainland europe could do me a favour and see if their dash units can be switched back and forth, or whether they only have KM/H available?

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks,

Storm

nein 20-01-07 18:39

No problem, I will try and tell you.
Just give a few minutes...

nein 20-01-07 19:05

I am sorry mate, but it did not work here either. I tried:

- Turning the ignition on and then pressing select for at least 30 secs.

- The same but keeping select pressed alredy before turning ignition on

- The same, but after having started the engine

All this having the total mileage on the display (ODO). I repeated the tests having the other trip counter on the display with the same result.

If you want me to try something else just let me know

Storm 20-01-07 19:12

That's pretty much what I did too. Cheers mate. :sad8:

Anyone else got any ideas?

CaptMoto 20-01-07 19:30

John, I would hate to think that the dash fitted to European bikes are programmed differently, however provided these are in full working order you should be able to switch between kpm and mph on the fly even when the engine is running, so without sounding silly have you tried to switch the engine on, then scrolled the display until the trip counter actually show ODO next to the number and THEN press the 2 buttons together for a short time, if everything works the display should swich to either mph or kpm. If it doesnt, either there's something wrong with it or you could try and refit the dash plug making sure it is correctly fitted and try again & report.

good luck

Capt, readin ther oer they last posts ...see am now delvin intae old stuff that a didnt know existed. a also sent a pm tae Magnum... a guy fae Edinburgh who joined up there in Nov 06...ye didnt tell me about him.... but as it goes kinda followin on tae some points in this thread.....

If I had to unplug ma dash unit fur some reason or the next....would all ma settings on the bike be shot.....or the same as before a unplugged it... or will the bike tally up wi it kinda thing when its replugged.....mabozzar

CaptMoto 21-01-07 00:20

I am not very knowledgeable on the matter, but having read the same question asked from Storm to Kev, I think the mileage is stored somewhere else and when you replug the dash it should relog the data as it was before you unplugged it.

afk40 21-01-07 03:49

Ok Capt, Fair enough... but ad really like tae know fur sure,,,maybe a`ll need tae ask Kev.????? cheers.

Kev 21-01-07 04:18

The CO1 setting is stored in the engine ECU & the Mileage is stored in the dash.
When the key is turned off, the last setting are burn in a permeant solid state memory chip in each ECU, which does no rely on battery power. So if the battery is disconnected it will still have it's Mileage & settings stored.

I have spent the last 4 hours trying to get the dash to change, it does not seem to work on my Kms dash.

One thing I have researched is that the UK has a different dash cluster.

5VK-83500-20. I have this dash kms
5VK-83500-30. UK only miles

Can some other members with Mile & Kms dashes try to change visor versa to see if the 5VK-83500-20 dash is unchangeable.

Cheers
Kev

CaptMoto 21-01-07 05:03

In a very strange way it makes sense, as uk is the minority in being the only country using miles instead of KM, explaining also the need of a conversion possibility, in case the bike is sold in Europe. The only other country using mph is USA where the bike is not imported anyway.

If that is the case this is bad news for young John who is now lumbered with a speedo that will only display KMH.

And John if you can't live with it, you could always re-sell it on eBay to get your money back and operate the current one with the broken fitting until you find another compatible one.

Sorry bro :(

Though if my memory doesn't fail me, Lawrence is about to break his bike and as far as I know his speedo is still in working conditions, only his fork/frame are fugged. Give him a bell, oh .... and remember, if he wants to sell it to you, and you need it in a rush you'd have to go and get it yourself off his bike, cause he can't use his hand yet, oh... and while you're there, help him out, will ya?.... give him a hand :D, know what I mean? Only make sure you bring me back his swingarm what it's got my name on it already :D :D :D

Kev 21-01-07 05:16

Not all lost

Captmoto if this is why the km dash can't be set to Miles, not all is lost as a speedo healer can be fitted to correct the kms to miles.

CaptMoto 21-01-07 05:20

Ha!! That is very good news then, I thought the speedo healer only adjusted incorrect reading caused by using different size sprocket than those for which the bike was calibrated with, didn't know you can also convert miles to kilometres and v/versa. And John will now be able to kill 2 pigeons with one stone since he was contemplating changing the front sprocket. mabozzar!!

A speedo healer should be able to adjust the inpulse speed down by 0.625 so it would indicate in miles. The Dash will always disply the sign KMS.

You can build one yourself from Jaycar in the UK, 14.50 Pounds.

Type in speedo in their Product search

Storm 21-01-07 10:26

Thanks guys, you've all been really helpful. I think my plan will be this:

-PM Loz and see if his dash unit is OK, and if he'll sell it to me.
-In the meantime, I'll live with KMH
-When my first MOT is due (July I think) I'll make the call on the speedo healer, if I havn't found another UK dash.

Storm

afk40 22-01-07 02:12

Fran.... mind gie Loz a shout about his Plastics... seein your swingin arm is booked....no whit a mean.....John

CaptMoto 22-01-07 02:28

will do :shave[1]:

bassplucker 20-04-07 22:41

Hello Captain moto does this change to mph work if the bike was purchased with the kph setting. cheers. Bassplucker

CaptMoto 20-04-07 22:54

No, Bassplucker we found out that if the bike is from Europe using the Km this will not change into miles, as Storm sadly found out when he bought a speedometer from Germany, following a needy replacement for his broken one. :welcome: to the forum by the way.... don't be shy, what's your name and where you're from, (doesn't that sounds like Cilla Black ?:tongue[1]: )

vipe 21-10-10 21:23

Hey, I do realise this is an old thread but can anyone tell me if the change in units also affects the odometer, ie do they also change units?

jarek77 03-07-11 12:50

Hi.I know how change MPH/KPH or KPH/MPH.In my xt660x 07. It is very easy.Turn on ignition key and than push select button on couple seconds. If you want back to previous adjustment do it again.:icon_biggrin:

Kullam 07-01-15 15:47

Hi,

Thanks to jarek77 information but can enyone else confirm that xt660 R/X mph speedo can be changed to kmh. My speedo is broken and it's europe model and i can't do it. I found two mph speedos on ebay but i like to be sure before i'll buy one.

Many thanks

All UK specification bikes can be changed from mph to Km/h. You should be fine buying a speedo from ebay UK.

Kullam 07-01-15 20:22

Thank you Pleiades :signthankspin:

Pleiades 07-01-15 20:28

Nerdy fact: All vehicles registered in the UK after 1st January 1977 are required by law to have a speedometer capable of displaying speeds in kilometres per hour as well as miles per hour. :sleepy1:
