Tenere single silencer experiment......

I've got tired of waiting for a cheap, as in cheaper than the 750Euro single can pipe that O-T-R.de are flogging, option to appear on the market and freely available in UK, so I found myself a cheap silencer can, and my first mistake.......

But not wanting to waste time, I used the Viper race can for it's footprint, as there is an 'E' marked road legal can available from Viper with the same dimensions and I have one getting delivered on Tuesday.
Anyway, I set to mounting the silencer and plumbing it in so not to foul any of the frame or plastics.....
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...s/P6110090.jpg

The link pipe had to be made from cutting the pipe from the standard rear box, a bit of a gamble really, but I had scribbled the measurements on the back of a fag packet, so it must of been right!!!!:002:

Next up was a couple of hours on my lathe, with a collar required to weld on the end of the link pipe, and a slip-on flange to connect it to the silencer....
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...s/P6130094.jpg

With the flange slipped on, I tig welded the collar to the link pipe at the correct angle to ensure the silencer didn't foul anywhere....

Everything was going well as I built the back-end up, and with a Viper support bracket, the silencer was held in a perfect position....
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...s/P6130093.jpg
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...s/P6130095.jpg

And from the rear it looks great....

On the right hand side I plan to fit a tooltube, hanging it of the frame somehow...... I'll sketch it on a fag packet......!:confused2:

But some further work is needed, firstly it is too loud for the law, though it sounds great, so the legal can will be fitted on Tuesday, and secondly I have made an aluminium tail-tidy bracket that will have a smaller LED stop/tail unit and the indicators fixed to it. This will put the number plate alongside the silencer outlet and the indicators will be above the silencer can.......
I'll update this thread when done....

Cool

Loving your work Timpo

Did you have trouble getting hold of an OTR pipe? They must be flying off the shelves at not much short of a thousand pounds for a bit of shaped metal

I take it the kitchen, living room and dining room has been turned into an production line as we speak.

Took my Tenere out for 200 miles over the Cambrian Mountains this morning - so much to do

On road, it's a peach but offroad......we're talking one of your bespoke single pipes, new springs all round, lighter wheels etc etc etc

Can I come to the "Timpotech" launch party ?

You're right about a normal absorption silencer being too loud Timpo. I tried a few on my Ten and the 50mm bore microns were stupidly loud. Good to see you're making progress.

OK, so I've just been and picked up an 'E' marked baffle kit to retro-fit my existing 'competition only' can......
First impressions is that the loud "BAB-BAB-BAB-BAB!" has turned into a "chuff-chuff-chuff-chuff"......... if you know what i mean, so I reckon it is quiet enough to keep PC Plod off my back..... though I'm still not 100% pleased. The backfires are not as agressive, more a sneeze now than a bang.
I have a lad looking into the correct 'E' marked silencer for me, so fingers crossed! I'll be amased if it is here by Wednesday though, as I'm off to Italy/Slovenia with the advrider.com crew for a weeks worth of trails.
When I get back, I'm going to look again at this set-up, and make some changes.

Hey Timpo done any more with your pipe project? Got any more pictures?

stromtrooper 27-11-09 22:08

Hey Timpo, you wany my opinion, more people should at least try this, there is plenty scope to get a slip on can on the end of the orig pipework, if cut close enought to the back box, I have a spare standard exhaust if anybody wants a piece of the action.

orig pipe is around 48mm, slip on can will be 50.8mm, so put the 2 together with a new clamp and gasket and slip on end can, hey presto, should be ok.

I wouldn't mind another bite at the cherry, this time I would use a fully 'E' marked silencer, again from Viper though.
I think the next can needs to be a slip-on, the flange arrangement used last time is too difficult to source...
