Fuel consumption
Well I was hoping for good fuel consumption, but i've only really managed about 40 to the gallon. Then last week I realized this was doing 70 - 80 on the motorway. So last week I stuck to back roads for my commute and did a trip to Brighton on A roads at the weekend and I managed 194 miles on 15.42 liters of fuel, which if I calculated right is 57 miles to the gallon and gives a theoretical 326 mile tank range! The lesson learnt here is don't do motorways... Back roads are more fun and don't really take that much more time, but use considerably less go juice!

I know that when you increase your speed its harder to get your bike to push through the air etc etc but at 70-75 i wouldnt have thought it was that hard. I still find your mpg figures low, i normally get 50-60 mpg and thats giving it some. Either that or you must be caining yours |
I'm doing between 300/320 km before the fuel gauge flashes and the F Trip appears.
I've done up to 380km and added 21l to the 22l tank. My commute is 60km (each way): 20 in town 35 on motorway 25 on back roads |
I ride almost 100% on the motorway and even if I cruise 85-90 I can still get 52-55mpg (typicaly about 15-16l after 185miles - 2 days commuting). This is with a top box and a kreigs R35 rucksack which do seem to help reduce drag (increasing fuel effeciency by about 10%). Sub 80 does help and if I keep to nearer 70mph I'd almost certainly get over 60mpg.
I do always get much better economy off the motorway however, hardly surprising if you're usually running the bike at 5-5.5k rpm range. The bike does seem to loosen up with age however, mine has done 12k miles now. |
For a city commute i'm getting a pretty consistent 48mpg. When running in my bike i once got 60mpg!
Overall i'm very happy with the fuel consumption - i don't treat the bike gently and getting nearly 50mpg in snarled up London traffic is impressive. |
Did 1500km last weekend on the Ten. About 350km highway and the rest was, let's call it "spirited", riding in mountainous terrain.
Consumption was consistently under 5L/100km. The fuel indicator does seem a bit pessimistic though as every time it had gone to reserve and I filled her up again I could not get more than 16,5L in the tank. |
Yes, i think everyone on the forum seems to say that the fuel gauge/warning trip meter is pessimistic. As soon as my fuel gauge starts flashing i know that i have at least 30 miles/50km before i need to start looking for fuel.
|
As I said:
I do between 300km and 320km before the fuel gauge start flashing. Then I can do 60km and I refill with 20 to 21 litres. So that's 380km with 21litres Thats about 5.5L/100km. Going From Ireland to italy and back next week, 2 up. I'll keep you updated |
I'd probaly say 50-60 miles is more likly, with up to 90 miles on reserve if you're ally taking it gently
reserve is 6.7l, which is 1.47 gallons. at 60mpg thats approx 90 miles. Yesterday I did 45 miles on reserve and still had over 2l left in the tank when i filled up. |
I've done lots of ridin' the last couple of days, mostly backroads: an average of 1lt to 25km's, that'll get me more then 500km's far(575 to be precize, with reserve), but I'll fuel up at 500km's. On the highway, doin' 120kmh, I'll get 21km's out of 1lt fuel, so that'll get me more then 450km's far(483km's), but I'll search a gasstation around 400km's, also to stretch my legs and get a drink. Pretty damn fine fuel economy!! One of the very strong points of the Tenere, I think, still goin' strong after more then 16.000km's 'till today! Sorry, guys&gals, for the metric figures, but y'all gotta convert them, please.
Greetz, Hans. P.s.: like I said before, I don't watch the fuel-gauge, but ride on the tripmeter. |
I mostly ride fast A & B roads (no dual or motorways) and get around 65mpg, with a fill up at around 220 miles even if the reserve hasn't started flashing, usually 14-15litres.
I found that the Tenere fuel consumption is very depended on the state of chain (lots of lube on a regular basis), tyres (correct pressure) and light hand on the throttle (sub-70mpg, rpm below 5k). Si |
last week i drove 556km till the last drop. 176km in 'reserve'. i was easy on the gas tho, never exceeded 4000rpm
|
In the 5th @ 4000RPM I get 107KM/h. Thats with my gf and loads of luggage in a relatively calm weather. Ive managed 3.8L/100km doing a ~400km trip (62MPG in the old money). I was gentle on the gas, never exceeded 5000RPM.

just been from lincoln to briancon in french alps and for the whole 7 day touring of the alps includeing a trip to Lake Como. I Avg 50mpg and did a total of 2500 miles.
travelled on motorway at 88-92mph and this i'm told is actually 81mph (gps) |
im not to bothered about fuel consumption as 98ron fuel cost $1.10 litre (55p litre) here in australia, sorry to put a blow to you high fuel price english riders lol but i fill my tank up for $12 (6) and it lasts erm....dont no and dont care!!! bring on the cheap fuel in australia

I'm getting about 60mpg on my bike, but with the dodgy fuel guage I'm never too sure of just how far I've got left in the tank. I usually fill up around the 250 mile mark.
What will happen if I do actually run out of fuel? Will I need to bleed into the FI system or can I just top up and go? |
I get around 4.5 l/100km which is around 63 mpg.

I have reverted to trip meter not fuel gauge. 400km then fuel up. **My worst fuel range 240km @ 150kph with major cross wind on sealed hwy. I used the whole tank.*** |
Let's say I get some 62 to 64 (sometimes more) MPG on average and becoming very sensitive about costs since the price in Italy is far above 1.7 /lt :088:

My standard use with the XTX660 is city commuting with heavy traffic, and with my 10L capacity (to reserve) I get a consistent 200km so 20km per litre ie 57 mpg. Really bad traffic can increase that by 10% so 52mpg. But "A" road cruising at a steady 75mph ish makes the consumption up to 15% BETTER ie as good as 65mpg. Amazing. And of course zero oil consumption too. Ask any BMW owner how much oil he adds, the boxer engine uses a litre every 500 to 600 km, amazing!!!!!
