Fuel tank mileage
 

I saw this post in the tenere section,

I was wondering what do people tend to get millage wise out of a tank of fuel in the XTr and X's??

I usually do 140 before I decide to fill up and thats not riding fuel efficiently either.

Riding it hard (120 km/hr plus)i get about 160 then the fuel light comes on. Riding more conservative (110-120km/hr ) i get 210km then light come on. From there in theory you still have 5 litres to spare, so if you have to you can push another 100km out of it, but then you need to have some fuel handy, you WILL die...pushing it also.

When running-in a new pair of Distanzias in the UK I got 79mpg report which would equate to 174 miles to 'reserve' and 261 miles per tank.

My latest mileage check in Spain was 105 kilometers (65 miles) to reserve on a Sirac front and a Karoo rear mostly off-road or 31 mpg (93 miles per tank).

The tyres you use and the type of road/off road has a huge effect on mileage. Admittedly that was on two different XT660R bikes but they are both modded similarly - PCIII (CaptMoto II UK - rich Zambesi Spain), snorkel,Kev's airbox and re-breather, K&N, DNAII, the only other difference being CCC longs on the UK bike and CCC stubbies on the Spanish one.

The UK bike is set up for general mainly road use and the Spanish one for maximum torque for hill climbing.

Those figures are both probably extremes which will not be achieved in normal running on a bike with part-worn tyres, but the Distanzia results were most encouraging for twisty road use and I am looking forward to returning to the UK mid-June to see what the results will be when I can really wind them up.

Fuel light starts to flicker around 160 miles and is on solid by 175 miles.

Work commute is 20 miles each way, half on A roads and half on motorway.

I only do 65mph on the motorway and 65mph on the A roads... :-)

Tyres are original Tourance just shy of 10K miles, should last until 12K miles and major service in two months time.

I never ride more than 270 km (155 miles) with a tank.
I going to put a big tank now, with 22 liters, it'll increase so much the mileage.
With two bottle with 3,5 liters each, I'll have 29 liters to drive. :wow:

Some people here are getting 25kms/lt thats 70mpg. i really hate paying 80/90%of what i pay for petrol to mr brown., but i cant seem to get any more than 13mls/lt, 60mpg on my 07 bike, are the earlier bikes more fuel ef ficient?. or is there something more sinister.
I,m very tempted to buy a 650 bmw they seem really economical.

Just got 45mpg from my 2006 XT660R in Jersey, although all I do is stop start stop start, especially as I do CBT training.

The Beemer may get better mpg but is more expensive to buy which you would have to offset.

As previously mentioned by others it all depends on how you ride and the condition of your bike. I've been away on my old blade with a mate who had exactly the same bike (even the colour) and he always got more miles to a tank full as I am a bit throttle happy.

Try and be as smooth as possible for one tankfull and try not to use more than say 60% throttle unless you have to and see what you get out of your tank. Bet you'll be surprised.

As said before its mainly down to how you ride your bike but also where you ride it, stop start journeys are always going to give you lower mpg than longer ones where theres less stop/starting involued.

60mpg is a good figure anyway from an offset but if your wanting an easy fix to get higher mpg buy a larger front or smaller rear sprocket to up the gearing and this will also give you more mpg

I've tripped my R regularly since I got it in October and the best I've had upto now has been 63mpg riding solo (in pensioner mode). The worst has been 53 mpg (two up in antisocial brainout nutter mode). I'm hoping it might get a bit better at it loosens up more, (2000 miles on clock) but if not its still better than my old zx7r did at 25mpg!!

Best i ever got was 79mpg which was a non stop ride on 1 tank full on mostly 40-60mph roads with very little stopping.

Worst i can remember was 50mpg but that was due to alot of stop start traffic work, and alot of faffing about in car parks trying to find out wheres/wheres and whats/whats when i was touring fully loaded.

One comment I made in one of the forum threads, when I changed my 07 ECU to a 05 ECU is it was better on fuel, it never was as low as 13kms/L. I can get around 300kms on 15L of fuel.

What mods are on your bike, where is your CO set to. If you want to do a few checks we would need to move the question to the ASK KEV section so we do not hijack this thread.

Normally I do around 300-325 km on a full tank

Mostly on the big open (what do you call it? a-roads?) with a bit of city and off-road also.

Well i kept below 70mph, and after 46mls filled the tank again with 3lts.

Why are you surprised? Because of the big difference?

With the weather this time of year being as it is Not so nice, I generally am only pottering ( true you dont really potter:bricks: on an xt ) around riding back and too, to work. But still getting no less than 50 mpg. Usually I get nearer 60. :icon_cyclops:

Hi There isnt when you get your bike done on the Dyno then that will sort everything out from the fuel till the air? And ones it is done you van no play around with the setting or it was kind of useless getting it done? Iam talking abt fuel up and down changing trottle position etc...

well, i do about 112-115 miles before the fuel light goes on, so with 10 liters - about 2.2 galons(uk) of petrol i do about 115 miles - thats about 52.5 miles/galon. i ride in london, so i think that's not to bad in this traffic. i have the k&n air filter and i do about 10 miles more than with the original filter. on a xt 660r, 2007. will kevs fuel mod help me do more miles before refueling?

Standard XTX apart from a pair of CCC cans. Used for commuting each day, about 5 miles each way (yeah , I know I should use the bicycle, but the XT is SO MUCH FUN)
The fuel light first flickers on at 86 miles (for 4 times in a row it was exactly 86.4 miles), I fill up at 100 miles with 10 litres. that's 45mpg.

The last few weeks, now it's lighter and warmer, I take the long way home once a week, about 15 miles, and my fuel light is coming on at 96 miles and filling up at 110. So I'm getting the extra 10 mile ride for free petrol wise.

Getting 120 miles before the light comes on at the moment, well chuffed with that after the XJR that the XT replaced was doing 90 miles before reserve and the tank was 3 litres bigger!!!

My standard 06 R does 210 miles till it stops and my wife's 07 R did 196 miles till it to stopped. We ran them dry as part of our testing for a RTW trip mainly on A roads and speed reduced to max 60mph.

I think the wife used more fuel to keep up or it could have been drag from her butt!!!!

I can get 380/420 miles from ma tank.. thats around the 630 kms...sayin that Ive a 27ltr tank....:happy7:
